chipped teeth

I need to cry here for a minute. B Fell last night and chipped her two front teeth. One corner and very bottom tip of the other straight across. It was only her and I in the room, so I of course feel beyond guilty. My MIL is a NP and happened to be around. She took a look and said the chip it self didn't do enough damage to take her to a dentist, but to keep an eye on any color change. So over all she will be fine. I know in the grand scheme of things it's no big deal and they are just baby teeth. Mommy guilt is just a huge b itch.

Re: chipped teeth

  • I'm taking y'alls silence as "you should feel guilty, hor."

  • Don't feel guilty, there's nothing you can do! As long as the nerve isn't exposed and you're sure the teeth look in the same spit they were in before, then no reason to take LO to the dentist now. However, when you take her to the dentist for check ups, let the dentist know each time that those teeth experienced trauma. I take periodic radiographs of teeth with trauma because they can experience "traumainduced external resorption". It's an inflammatory process where the end of the root wears away sooner than normal. Because it is an inflammatory response, left unnoticed it can cause damage to the permanent teeth. And the only way to be able to see that is an xray. Also, just FYI, any time there is trauma to a baby tooth there can be effects on the permanent tooth, like white spots. Not anything you should worry about at all, just something to keep in mind when those permanents come in.

There is absolutely nothing we can do as parents to prevent 100 of all kid injuries, they are going to happen!

  • DS chipped his front tooth in the tub about a month ago.  Yep, mommy guilt here too.  But, I have a chipped tooth from the playground when I was nine, so I guess it makes us matchy-matchy.
