I've been bfing for 5 days. I've been using nipple shields for two days. My nipples are so sore I almost can't take it anymore. I've been using nipple butter and lanolin. Any other ideas?

Does LO have a shallow latch? I thought things were fine when we left the hospital and then realized we'd established a shallow latch. I worked on correcting it and wore the soothies gel pads and things were better in a couple of days. Seriously those things are worth every penny. Put them in the fridge! Ahh, sweet relief. :]

This was my experience too. Make sure you are sort of flattening your areola to make a boob sandwhich for baby and make sure he/she opens really wide. Also the soothies were my savior. Just make sure to rinse of your nipples before you feed baby. I promise promise promise by 2 weeks it will be better, by three weeks tolerable and by 6 weeks almost enjoyable.
I've been bfeeding for 9 days now and i just want to tell you that it really does get better. I almost gave up so many times the first few days due to soreness, lack of sleep, and the constant pain but by the end of the first week I noticed it was getting a little easier. Like PP said, I can still feel some discomfort the first 30 seconds and sometimes it's still a hassle to find the perfect latch but there is some improvement! Hang in the mama

STICK IT OUT!! I know the pain sucks big time. Try letting your "sisters" air out in between feedings. That helped mine.
