Laidback Nursing position?

Hello, I'm a FTM trying to figure out the best positions for my LO to EBF. We usually stick with the regular sidelying cradle hold, and her latch is great. I had her on my tummy while I was reclined for some tummy time near meal time and she rooted, and I ended up feeding her froggy legged horizontal kinda sitting on my lap, with her body against mine. When she unlatched herself she even had a nice big burp independantly, and moved on to the other breast, again on her own.
After this happened, I googled to see what the position is called, and what I found was very limited. Biological Nursing or BN, or 'laidback' nursing ia what I found.
My question: doea anyone know any drawbacks or concerns for this position, other than the risk of falling asleep with LO still latched? I mean, in hospital I was taught four positions, and this was not one of them. There must be a reason for that, since it is so comfortable and seemingly comforting for my daughter as well, is there a hidden danger I am too sleep deprived to think of? LO is 3 weeks now and loves this position.
If this question has already been posted recently, I apologize! I tried to look through the last couple pages but I am on my phone and the titles are cut off on the mobile site.
Thanks again in advance!

Re: Laidback Nursing position?

  • Honestly I think any position that is comfortable for you and LO is a good position. If you're afraid of falling asleep and her rolling off I guess I would just do it while you're not likely to fall asleep.

  • I agree, no down side other than being sure you won't fall asleep.  We also used this positon a lot in the early weeks.  In fact the LLL book (The Womanly Art of BF'ing -- I highly recommend it if you haven't read it yet.) suggests this as a good 1st nursing position.

  • Thank you all so much for the feedback! I wonder why it's not taught with the usual four methods in hospital. I have not read that book but I will look into buying it or downloading it. I feel more at ease using this method now. It's super comfy and produces a wicked burp everytime. Love it. Thanks again!

  • IMO this should be the first position they teach. So easy and comfy and it really helps baby learn how to latch properly. This position solved all of the nipple pain issue I was having early on due to a shallow latch. It was a LLL leader who recommended it to me.

  • I took a parenting the newborn class while pregnant and this is the position they strongly recommended - especially for establishing a good latch at the beginning. The lactation consultants in my area strongly recommend it.
