Cloth Diapering

Starting to feel overwhelmed!!

Hey there mamas! I'm due in 12 days for scheduled c-section. Ive been really getting into cd since I'm now a stay at home mom of two kidos now. But I don't know if its the my hormones getting the best of me but I'm starting to really get hesitate about cd. I've been watching sooooooo many videos on you tube and been on probably every website and blogs there are. I went crazy on eBay yesterday and brought about 4 different types of cd and wanted to try them out that way. But I'm starting to get worried and I'm jumping into this too fast. More so that when baby comes I won't be able to do it. Can you lovely mamas out there tell me how it went when you started cd. I has already brought dd and was thinking about using them for the first weeks or so and slowly start cd. Please let me know what you think!! Also Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

Re: Starting to feel overwhelmed!!

  • Really, it's nothing to freak out about! It's no different from disposables, when the baby needs a change you change a diaper. Put the dirty one in a pail. The only difference is, you're doing a load of laundry every other day instead of taking out the trash. I wouldn't use the disposables unless you don't have anyone to help you do laundry while you recover. I don't think cding is as complicated as you've freaked yourself out into thinking!

  • I had a c-section too, and it was super easy to cd. I use a wetbag rather than a diaper pail and on laundry day I just dump the whole wetbag in the washer and dry it as well. Laundry is really easy before solids, and putting a diaper on is no harder whether it's cloth or sposie. You might have a couple leaks at first, as you will with sposies, but trust me you will have way less poop leaks to deal with as the months go by.

    Good luck!

  • I was overwhelmed and I didn't start with my DS until recently!  I started out by buying 3 pocket diapers to just try them out and get used to them.  As the weeks went on I gradually bought more as I became comfortable.  I was worried if I bought a whole stash right away I would get super overwhelmed so I eased myself into it.  That's a way to go about it as well.  You don't have to cloth diaper full time right away.

  • I decided to forgo the NB stash, and just start with OS diapers. I'm glad I did since I was frazzled as a first time mom, and had issues with BFing, a colicy baby, ppd, etc. There were many a moment I doubted I would ever feel up to cd'ing.

Then when DD was a month old I just started, and I realized it was so easy! I just changed my baby like usual, I just had an extra load of laundry every day and a half (small stash back then). There really and truly is nothing to cd'ing.

And the beauty is that there are no rules, if you start and it's too much at that time, you just use the sposies, and start again in a week or two. I promise though you won't need to :)

  • I'm new to CD as well.  I had a c-section 2 wks ago and we started PFs w/covers when LO was 8 days old. I must admit I was quite overwhelmed even though I thought I had a good grip on things beforehand.

Recovering from the c-section was actually easy and not a problem.  However, I was overwhelmed w/laundry - btw our clothes and LO's clothes and CDs - I was doing 1-2 loads a day.  Add that to EBF that takes up 4-5 hrs a day; I was just exhausted.  And I had trouble getting the PFs/covers on LO w/a good fit b/c he HATES diaper changes and squirms a lot.  His cord stump still hasn't fallen off yet and some covers are too big as they go above the belly button. In addition, the PFs are really bulky yet LO is on the small side w/skinny legs, it just seems like I can never get a good seal w/the CDs.

At first we were trying to snappi, but it took us forever to get it right.  W/suggestions here, we are for now doing just the trifold & covers.  We do have poop leak occasionally but it's less stressful than fumbling with the snappi w/LO wailing and squirming.

In any case, it's been almost a week now since we started, and I feel like I'm starting to have a better handle on things.  I'm hoping that as  LO gets bigger and after his cord stump falls off, things will continue to get easier.  GL!

  • Thank you all so much! It makes it a lot better :)

Quick question..Do you all use a diaper sprayer? I've been reading that it helps a lot but just wondering before I make an expensive purchase.

    thanks again!!

Our washroom is small so I just use the handheld shower head from the shower and spray it into the toilet.
