Breastfeeding

I dont get it

If the bm changes to be more calorie rich as the baby gets bigger then how can I give dd frozen milk that I pumped at 1 mo old when she is 5 months old?? Wouldn't it not be appropriate for her then?

Re: I dont get it

  • well, any breastmilk is usually better than not, which is the freezer rationale. It's best to give fresh when you can, frozen when you have to and rotate what's in the freezer. My LC said that time of day/month differences are negligible.

  • You are only supposed to give a few ounces maybe 1 bottles worth of old per day. If I'm thawing milk for daycare, ill put 1oz/bottle of the old and then top it off with fresh milk.

  • Thanks! I'm glad I asked! How do you rotate the milk?

  • I'll be the outlier and say it changes (I'm speaking of after you have transitioned to mature milk at 2ish weeks) but it's fairly negligible hence the concept of milk banking.  I agree that fresh is better than frozen, milk is a live substance and the white blood cells may not survive the storage effort and as it gets older has a higher chance of bacterial colonization.  That being said I had quite the oversupply so I have about 1200oz still in the freezer and so DD2 gets frozen milk each day I am at work and from the boob in the evenings--- I have no empirical evidence that this is a "bad" thing.

  • I also use frozen for oatmeal and to mixed with solids which is all bonus in terms of calories anyway.
