Does anyone who is doing formula for their Preemie - do formula other than Neosure? I would like to try to Fussiness & Gas one but my Pedi said to stay with Neosure
I'm not sure how early your preemie was, but there are 2 reasons doctors recommend Neosure. One, preemies often need more calories, but also Neosure has key nutrients not found in other formulas. They're the nutrients babies are supposed to get in the third trimester. DD gained weight pretty quickly from it, but the dr. wouldn't let us switch because she missed the entire third trimester and needed those nutrients.
We did. My doc said neosure until they were 6 months. Nathan was on it until then even though he gained weight well, etc. Joey I took off at 4 months. He was so uncomfortable, every single feed he was screaming, arching his back, it took forever to finish a bottle. It was awful. I went against my pedi's advice even after she insisted that even with those issues he still needed the Neosure. I just couldn't do it. He still gained ok and was much happier. I'm not sure in the long run how it did/didn't affect him, but I just couldn't handle it anymore.
Do you see a GI for reflux or other digestive issues? If so Id consult with them. The first formula of choice seems to be Neosure but there are many reasons that other formulas are introduced.
My micropreemie was primarily fed fortified BM, which was initially fortified with neosure. It had to be switched to enfamil because of kidney/diuretic/calcium/sodium problems that she was having. When we started introducing some formula bottles at 9 months we stayed with the enfamil, but mixed it to be 22cal rather than the 20cal that is indicated on the package.
We fortify BM with enfacare. You could ask to try enfacare instead of similAc. Sometimes switching brands helps. But talk to your pedi about your concerns first. There may be options you hadn't considered. We also add lactobacillus reuteri to the BM to help with gas and fussiness. So far so good.
