Seriously, should I worry?

I know this is discussed all the time but Logan still does not crawl. He doesn't even get up on all fours or army crawl. He also doesn't pull up or even try. Sometimes he even falls over and hits his head because he will be holding something, get excited and not catch himself.

However, he will hold onto one of my fingers with each and hand walk around our house forever. He will get to something he wants to see, let go and just stand there holding onto it, for example, the couch, baby gate, etc... He also lets go with one hand and can stand supporting himself just holding on with his other hand.

So while I worry a lot about the first stuff I mentioned I tend to justify it with the walking and standing. What do you think? Is he maybe going to just skip crawling? I'm afraid at his 9 month appointment they are going to tell me something's wrong. I know babies all develop differently but of course, I can't help but worry! We go to play dates with babies the same age and he sits there while everyone else is crawling, trying to climb the stairs, pulling up, you name it. I guess I just need reassurance since none of the babies his age I know IRL are still where he's at.

Re: Seriously, should I worry?

  • I will tell you that my pedi told me they don't use crawling as a milestone anymore.  That being said, a while badk there was a post where someone put in a link to an article explaining the benefits of crawling (brain development?).  BUT I didn't read it as they have to crawl first.  Once he starts walking you can play crawling "games" with him later.

Any yes, all babies are different so try not to compare to the others even though it is hard and our natural instinct.  Honestly, Allison went from nothing to racing on all fours overnight...no rocking, no army crawl, nothing.

I hope you hear at his 9 month appointment that he is just fine!  Sounds like he just is perfectly happy being non-mobile for now...

  • My LO was 9 months on the 12th of Nov and he does NOT crawl at all. He barely gets up on all fours. He perfers to sit and look around. He rolls all around but does not seem interested in crawling. We have our appt today and will chat about this with our pedi, but I am trying not to worry. LO also likes to just stand with little support and talk around in place. don't worry :) which is easier said then done

I thought 9 months was the average age for crawling, so I definitely wouldn't worry. Cody just started crawling and pulling up on things last week. He had no desire to pull up until he was able to crawl over to the couch on his own.

I know it's frustrating when it seems like they are taking forever to learn a new skill, but big picture wise, he's not behind. When it does happen, everything will fall into place overnight. It doesn't happen slowly, but all at once.

And then he won't sleep because all he wants to do is crawl around the crib...or maybe that was just Allison!  He will get there, and when he does you will want him to be stationary again - it's a cruel joke!

(I'm not making light of your concern, I was trying to coax a smile out of you...did it work?)

  • I think my girls might be the oldest on here and they did a lot of stuff later then it seemed like other babies were doing things (like rolling over).  We have a bunch of babies walking on here, yet the girls show no interest.  I can't even get them to walk around holding onto my fingers like your LO does.  Yes, they crawl, and they have been for probably 2 months, but your LO is also about 6 weeks younger then mine are.  FWIW, I found this link and it says that crawling is usually between 7-10 months.

I try not to get caught up in comparing the girls to babies on this board too much (at least, not in a negative, worrying kind of way) because it seems like we have a bunch of overachievers on this board!

  • My mom told me that I never crawled.  And my 2nd cousin didn't crawl either.  She sat there and pulled things towards her instead of crawling to go get them.  She "scootched" a bit here and there, but that's it.  She liked to stand holding someone's hand and one day, she just started walking on her own at 14 months.  And we both turned out just fine!

I wouldn't worry much, but discuss it with your pedi at your 9 month appt. and see what s/he says.  There's a broad window for development and your little guy is still right in the middle.

  • Katherine is well into her 9th month and hasn't crawled. Our pedi wasn't worried about that even the tiniest bit. K does get up on knees and hand and looks like she is ready, but she hasn't army crawled or anything like that.

I wouldn't worry if Logan is hitting other milestones. Is he a big baby? Our's is a chunky monkey and the size may be what has complicated things.

It did work! This is why I love this board! Thanks ladies, sometimes it just helps to hear it from you. :)

He's average, around 18lbs. I've always thought maybe it's because he has short little legs that she can't get up under him, haha!

I'm really not intending this to be snarky, but I know that it may come out that way...so I prefacing my comment with, IT'S NOT intended to be snarky!

My little man, well not so little, is a chunk.  At his 9mo appt last week, he weighed 24lbs 8oz and was 29 inches long.  I've had a ton of people, mostly older, tell me he won't do this or that for a while because he's "so big".  This statement is completely not true.  I just don't want you thinking that oh, she won't do this or that because she's chunkey monkey, that's all.

As for OP and others with non-crawlers, I don't know that I'd be 'worried' either.  I do believe the crawling window is very broad.  As long as LO is doing 'other' things and is interactive and things like that, I think he's fine.

  • Our doc also said crawling isn't a milestone. No worries!

  • DS did not start crawlng until fairly recently either. I've heard that a lot of babies just don't crawl, but rather go straight to walking. I would think that since he's able to hold onto your fingers and walk around, there's probably not much concern about development.

Of course, talk to your pedi if you're concerned.

And I agree with the PP about chunky monkeys. I have one too, and he's doing just fine! I don't think anything he did later than some other babies on the board was due to his size. Babies are just different, DS one of the "younger" Feb babies, and it seem like a lot of TB Feb 12 babies do things really early. Big Smile

  • See my ticker.

    Liam doesn't crawl.

Maddie never crawled.  She basically sat there until 14 months when she walked.

Enjoy the not chasing your kid.  :)
