Baby Names

Is it too common?

I'm almost scared to write this post because I'm not sure if I really even want to know the answer.

Before I even met my DH (about 4 years ago) I fell in love with a girl name. At the time it wasn't that popular, but it has become more popular. When DH and I got more serious and started talking about marriage and children I told him the girl name I wanted and he LOVED it, which is funny now because he absolutely hates every boy name suggestion.

So tell me what you think, the girl name we love is Evelyn Christine (MN is my MN).

Is Evelyn way too popular? As in, do you personally know people that are naming their DD this?

Re: Is it too common?

  • It's definitely climbing in popularity, but I think it's a lovely name.  You may want to look up how popular it is in  your state, which is a little more indicative of how common it may be in your DD's class. I don't personally know any baby Evelyns. I find Eleanor to be much more common around here, even though it's much lower on the SSA list.
  • I'm in a similar situation, except I just found out I'm having a boy, so I don't have to deal with this decision yet. I've always loved the name Evelyn. My great-grandma's name was Eveleigh (that's right. There's no R in there), and I thought it would be nice to honor her, without using her actual confusing name.

When I shared the name Evelyn with DH years ago, he fell in love with it.

Now, the popularity scares the crap out of me, but DH doesn't like any other girl names. He doesn't even want to discuss it. The name has stolen his heart.

I don't know what we'll do if we ever have the opportunity to name a girl. I will say that I don't know any Evelyns in real life. I see it online almost every day, though--which really bothers me. My gut tells me that if you love, love, love the name, and nothing else compares... go with it anyway. Good luck with your decision!

It was a rough road, but Arlo Daniel was born April 1, 2013—and our second rainbow is due October 12, 2014.

  • I know one Evelyn.  She's 15 months.  If you really like Evelyn, who cares if it's popular?  Go with what you love.  You'll probably regret not using it.  FTR I really like Evelyn Christine.  If you want something a little less popular, what about Evangeline?

  • I suggested Evelyn to my SO but he didn't like it. I love Evelyn Christine, it really flows together.

  • The only Evelyn I know is my aunt, but other than that. NOPE. Love the name though.
  • I know it is rising in popularity, but I haven't met any yet.

  • I think when we like a name, we are more aware of it when we hear it.

I have a cousin named Evelyn, she is in HS now.  She is the only one I know personally (IRL and online!).

I have noticed that it's becoming more popular, but it's certainly not a "popular" name.  I wouldn't worry about it.  Evelyn Christine is lovely.

  • We are 99% sure that we are naming our little girl Evelyn.  I love the name.  Overall it is fairly popular, #24 in the nation last year, I think.  However, it was only #44 in my state.

I only know one Evelyn right now, a 7th grader that I currently teach.  Before this, the only Evelyn I have ever known was a girl my age back in elementary school.

  • I really like it. I don't personally know anyone who has named their baby that. If you love it, go for it!

  • If you love it and you can stand hearing/see several other Evelyn's then go for it! We are going with the popular Ava...but we just love the name so much that we are willing to deal with it. Plus, our friends who are teachers in our district only know two Ava's between K-5th grades. So we are comfortable with it.

  • I wouldn't consider it "too common"
  • Thanks so much for the feedback ladies! I really love the name and so does DH.

  • I haven't heard it on any children.  BTW, I love the idea of Evie as a NN.
  • I don't know anyone with that name, but it seems like around 50 to 60 percent of the girls in DDs school have the "lyn" in their name and that would make me avoid it.

  • I know one Evelyn. She is five or so.

It's our girl name as well. I don't care how popular it is. It's DHs grandmother (she passed before I met her) and it's a beautiful name. Classic and traditional. Our pick is Evelyn Ruth. Evelyn Christine is also beautiful. Will she be your Evie? That's our NN.

  • It's quite common now. I know 2 little Evelyns (1 is 15 mos and one just turned 2), so it's rising in popularity because I've never run into kids older than three named this.

If you like it, don't let it stop you if that's what you really want, but yeah, if you're trying to avoid something that common, Evelyn may not be the way to go.

  • I'm on the April 2012 board and there are quite a few Evelyn's. It's beautiful and strong though...if that is the name you want absolutely do it. Who cares if it's popular? It's going to be her identity, You might be bummed if you don't pick your dream name!
