We went through 4 diapers bags before settling on this one. We CD also, and this bag is amazing. I can put everything I need for baby, plus 10 OS diapers and still have plenty of room. its not too big to carry though, and I can still get it under my stroller easily. AND it doesn't look like a diaper bag.
A friend of mine that has twins recommended it to me and I'm in love with it. I rave to everyone I can about it.
AND its only $70 on amazon!

I agree with the skip hop. I have the messanger one and its so big I never run out of space and its better than the other bags the grandmas have or my husbands bag. The brand is a winning brand across the board
I am a fan of carrying giant purses so I may be biased but I find the Skip Hop bags way too small. I'm the kind of person that likes to pack for every scenario and they just weren't big enough to cram in all the junk I wanted to cart around with me. I rotate between my giant Marc Jacobs diaper bag, the Kate Spade Stevie bag and, for short trips, I got a great bag made by Baby Cargo that has big grommets that let you hang it right on the handles of an umbrella stroller. I ended up using my two Skip Hop bags as emergency kit bags for each of the cars. It's more for my husband since he has no ability to pack a bag on his own if he goes out with the baby by himself!
I don't CD, but I don't think that means a ton of extra supplies except I'm assuming some kind of bag to put the dirty one(s) in. I'm not one that feels the need to carry every possible item in a diaper bag, but then again we don't leave the house for 12 hours at a time. With an infant, I'd check for space for 2 bottles, 1 toy, 1 book, a swaddle blanket, 2 burp cloths & bibs, extra pacis, 3 diapers/wipes & butt cream, changing pad, hand sanitzer. I would test bags out in person. Make sure it feels comfortable on your shoulder, not too heavy when empty, and is there at least 1 designated pocket (zippered?) for your stuff (keys, phone, wallet).
I have the Coach diaper bag that I got at the outlets for like $130. I really like it and expect it to last a really really long time, and become a work bag when its baby-bag days are over. It doubles as my purse when I'm out with DD, and I've never found it to be too small.

I did a bunch of googling, asked on the CD board, and ultimately went down to one of the more boutique stores in my area that carries a variety of brands. I pulled them out of displays, opened them up, shoulder tested them, etc. I was originally thinking of a JuJuBe BFF but when I saw it in person it didn't look big enough/the right shape. I totally fell in love with another bag - Kalencom Weekender. I love that the bag itself is super light, has TONS of room and seems comfy to carry. If no one gets it for me for Christmas, I'm going to order it myself. I also registered for (and received) this bag that a friend recommended. I love the way it opens wide and has lots of different pockets. I think it will be great for daily use and the Kalencom would be ideal for longer days/overnights/etc.
Re: How in the world do you choose a diaper bag?
Skip. Hop. Duo. Tote.
