How old were your twins? The foot rest thing broke on our which is a pain since whoever is in that seat can scoot themselves around if they lean far enough forward for their feet to touch the ground. I'm wondering if it's worth getting another stroller.
Re: When did you stop using a stroller?
we used ours a lot until the twins were two. Now its occasional like pp said but I would be lost without it at time. Like when I am alone with, in a store, and I have to buy something important, that might take awhile. Having them contained is really helpful!
Also sometimes they are just tired and whiny and I take them for a walk in the stroller so they can chill.
We used ours until DDs were about three and really haven't used one since.
We tried to use the umbrella stoller connectors before and they don't work well at all. Two umbrella strollers would be fine if you're planning on going on outings with another person though. We used two singles quite a bit with DDs when DH and I were both there.

right around 2 years old. Then I switched to two umbrella strollers and use the connectors. I use the umbrella strollers sans the connectors when I have to take both to the Dr office by myself. It's certainly an art pushing both of them at the same time, but I've mastered it
