Possible Lactose Intolerance or Reflux?

So, DS has been fine with formula since his third week after BFing didn't work out, but suddenly for the last week he has been crying after half his feedings. He's fine during his MOTN feed, and most times his first one in the morning, but with all the others as soon as the bottle leaves his mouth for more than five seconds he gives a little squeal and starts crying. This bothers me because I used to leave him sitting on my lap for a little after eating to rub his tummy as it seemed to keep him from spitting up when he went up to burp. I'd be a little more worried if he wasn't always just fine after burping. Also, now after his burp he pretty much always spits up a little, and it looks a little more solid than when he used to spit up a couple months ago. I've tried different things, like giving him cold formula, but it didn't work.

I'm wondering if anyone with a Lactose Intolerant/Reflux baby noticed something like this before getting their baby medication or changing formula.

Or could it be that he now knows I'll lift him up to burp when he cries?

He doesn't appear to burp anymore than he used to, so I don't think he's getting more air, but do you ladies think I should try switching nipples?

I'm not terribly worried since he's fine once he burps, but am I perhaps a little too relaxed? Should I not wait for his four month appointment to ask about it should it continue?

Re: Possible Lactose Intolerance or Reflux?

  • My daughter doesn't have reflux but she is lactose intolerant and on soy formula. The signs were horrible, all day gas, arching her back and fussing while eating, refusing to eat more than a few sips at once, and mucus in her poop. She would take hours to make it through one bottle. She never spit up. She doesn't have any of these issues anymore since we switched to soy.

  • My first thought was that maybe your baby is still hungry? DS did that during his growth spurt when he went from 4 oz to 6 oz meals. Otherwise, unless your LO has bloody stool or arching back etc then it doesn't sound like lactose intolerance.

Whoops, forgot to mention that. He's done it after each bottle. After he did have a growth spurt I started alternating between 4 and 6 ounces till I figured out what he wanted, and it turned into a habit unless timing made me think he definitely wanted the 6 ouncer. I tried giving him a little more each time he cried one day and lost some, and then tried giving 6 ounces each time one day and he left some in the bottle sometimes.

You both still made me feel better about waiting since it doesn't seem like anything serious. Thank you for posting. <3
