Reading baby's cues

Hi there-

You would think after 8 weeks I would know if baby is hungry but I am still not always positive...I tend to look at the clock and think if it's been less than 2 hrs since I fed her that she can't be hungry again.  But, should I assume if she is crying after a nap and not wanting a paci that she is hungry?! I suppose if she eats, she must be, right? help, I didn't think I wouldn't know this...do your babies have different cries for different things? I feel like during the day she wants to eat about 1 1/2 hrs after I started feeding her the last time. Typical? She will go as much as 6 hrs at night without eating. Eh, maybe this is a dumb question at all!

  • Not a dumb question in my opinion. Sometimes it's hard to tell. I don't think my baby has different cries. But I think hunger is the only thing she really cries for. She might fuss if she's just tired, but usually only proceeds to full on crying if she's really hungry. Or if we're giving her a bath, she hates the bath! I typically don't watch the clock. If she's fussy, I offer a boob. She's never really turned it down. And it always seems to calm her. It works for us.

  • Babies can eat every 1 - 3 hours. Look for your baby smacking their lips together or opening their mouth in the direction of anything near their face. Crying is usually the last resort for these little guys.

This was my experience when my guy was little.  He only got fussy/cried if he was hungry.  It was only when he fussed that I would look at the clock and think - "ooohhhhhhhhh."
