How much to pump??

Okay so I've pumped a few times for LO to get her used to bottle for when I go back to work. I know they say in the begining to only give 2oz, but umm she's guzzling that down with ease WHEN she does take the bottle. She'll be 1 day shy of 8wks when I start back work. Should I still do a lot of 2 oz bottles/storage bags, or should I just fill the entire bottle/bags & let her eat as much/ little as she wants??

  • Never fill the whole thing unless it is less than 4 oz or you will end up with lots of wasted milk. Most BF babies will only take 4oz from a bottle at a time, and you don't want to have to worry about thawing a whole 8 oz bag and having to toss half because it gets too warm or is not needed at the time

Okay cool thank you!! The bottles that I have are 4oz. As far as the bags I'll fill those and just seperate them of course, then put them in the fridge for later times.

All babies guzzle from a bottle, because it comes out much faster than the breast and they don't have to work for it.  Their reflexes have them swallowing just as fast as they can because they can't control the flow and otherwise they'd drown.

You need to really work on not letting her guzzle, giving her the bottle in a way she isn't drowning in the milk. I can't think of a single 7 week old I know that drinks 4oz of milk.  My son didn't take 4oz of milk until he was about 5 months, and at 12 months old he was still only taking 4oz of milk.

And you don't want to fill up the bottles, because they may not be able to reuse them at your daycare, which means they will be throwing away your milk.  Plus you'll be stretching her stomach out, so she'll need more milk and since she's not drinking that much from you, you won't be able to keep up with her demand.

I didn't really mean guzzling as in drinking it fast, more like drinking a lot of it. Sorry if I was unclear. I spoke to my LC she said it's fine to up it to 3-4oz since babies differ. Said it was fine as long as she's willing to eat that much. I was also told to get a slow flow nipple so the milk would come out how it would from the breast.
