Breastfeeding

May be a silly question

I have a friend who breastfeedsand she said that on nights she goes drinking she pumps and then boils the breastmilk. She said it heats the alcohol out of the breast milk before she gives it to her son. Is this accurate information???

  • It may be true when cooking with alcohol, but I can't imagine it being true for breast milk. Also, boiling it would remove pretty much many nutrients/protective factors, would it not [correct me if I am wrong]? Scalding it is an option if you have high lipase which leads to our baby not accepting frozen milk, but the key there is scalding, not boiling.

Alcohol leaves your milk exactly as it leaves your blood, so it's not like your milk is tainted for good.

I thought that this is not true...? ETA: For pumped milk.

Alcohol leaves your milk at the same rate that it leaves your blood.  You can read either of the links I posted above for more info.

I understand that. I was a little bit confused because of the talk about pumping. Nevermind. :)
