SIL and a puppy

I am getting upset thinking about this so i need to vent somewhere.

SIL has had two dogs since I've met her. One with her ex, that she hated and finally made her exH take, and one she got young who was taken away by the SPCA for neglect.

She's been talking about getting a puppy since before she got the last dog (who was a little over a year). Now she says shes getting one for Christmas "for the boys".

I have seen those boys beat the crap out of every dog in that house. No one trains the dogs. SIL is never home. Their whole family thinks its entirely acceptable to leave a dog in a crate or a garage all day (past work hours) year round.

There is really nothing i can do about this, but it makes me upset.

Re: SIL and a puppy

  • I would have the SPCA on speeddial and call them shortly after they get the puppy if the same pattern continues.

  • That would be so hard to see. I know people who clearly don't really like animals and keep getting pets. Then the pets get ignored except for the bare necessities. It makes me so angry.

If she had one dog taken away, maybe when you start to see the signs of abuse you can call the spca and they'll intervene again.

  • This makes my heart hurt.

Yeah I would probably call SPCA after they get a puppy and let them know the history and see what they can do.

  • Her exH is a cop and last time he found out and told her who reported her so I don't think that reporting her is a real possibility.

Can't you get someone she doesn't know to report her? Because is so unfair for that new puppy :(

  • If the SPCA took her dog before for neglect, did they charge her?  Often, when people have animals taken away (and it my experience, it takes sort of a lot to take them away), they are also charged with animal neglect or cruelty (depending on the state law).  If she was, it's possible that she isn't legally allowed to have animals some time frame afterwards.  Just a thought.

I would certainly have the SPCA's number available if she does get the puppy - you should be able to report to them anonymously if necessary.
