Its uncomfortable sitting next to each other because you have to crane your neck to look at each other, and booths aren't really good for cuddling anyway, and your elbows hit each other when you're trying to cut up your food.
ETA: to make sense. I'm tired, need coffee.

Across from each other. I think we tried side by side once and it was uncomfortable. Trying to have a conversation, especially while eating, is difficult to do if you have to look sideways. Sitting across we can see each others smiles, we can have eye contact, etc. plus, what do you both look at in front of you if you are side by side?
Across. We may have sat next to each other when we started dating, but that was nearly 23 years ago now and we are over that now. LOL.
My skating teammate (in her 40s) is dating a new man right now and she was swooning when she was telling us how he always sits next to her in the booth. She thinks it's intimate and sweet. That's nice she is so excited about the new relationship.

I know you all want an update. Bump it lady settled on sitting across from her H. The side she is sitting on is smaller too so I think she made the right choice.
DH is all about sitting next to each other, but it just feels so awkward. The only reason I'd sit next to him instead of across would be so we could share a newspaper while we wait on our meal. Does that make me sound old? lol

It makes you sound French. But maybe that is because of your username.

Don't be Same Siders. My wife and I laugh hysterically at Same Siders.
Lol - we sit across from each other, too.
We always make fun of couples who sit right next to each other in a pick up truck, though (are my farm girl roots showing?). Do you really need to be rightnext to each other? Really?
We sit across from each other, but mainly that is because DS is with us sitting on my side, and H sits with our bags/coats. I think we've been out once alone since DS was born.

Same sider.
(Obvious exception if it is a group event)
I knew I'd find one. They are pretty rare though. Even lovely teens sit across usually.

I was a bartender for years, we made fun of same-siders.
And too often it looked like the guy was getting a handy.
