Babies: 9 - 12 Months

WCM question

...because I never paid attention to any posts that talked about this before since they didn't apply to me yet.  Oops.

WCM isn't until after a year, or they're fully weaned right?  Right now we JUST dropped down to 3 bottles, 24 oz.  He's getting the fat and calories from his formula and doesn't need it.  And then after a year if he's still taking a bottle or two we just try to offer him milk in a sippy instead?  Am I getting this right?

Re: WCM question

  • Our pediatrician said that we can switch to WCM at 11 months.  My nephew is 15 months, and he switched at a year.  They tried to give him straight milk and he wouldn't drink it, so they had to mix the formula and WCM to get him used to it.  They started with one ounce of WCM and over a week increased the milk and decreased the formula until he was drinking straight milk.  He also won't drink it out of a sippy cup and drinks his WCM in a bottle.  Depending on your LO, when you switch you can either just start replacing formula bottles with WCM or if he won't drink it then you could wean him onto it like my sister did.

We've started offering their formula in sippy cups.  DD1 is having none of it, but DD2 will usually drink it all from her sippy cup.  I'm hoping that by the time we're ready to move to WCM they'll both be using the sippy cup, but if DD1 is still fighting it in a couple of weeks them I'm going to try offering WCM only in a sippy cup and never put it in a bottle.

  • Mine just turned 11 months and I am going to start by slowing mixing in whole milk. I think might take a few weeks to completely change her and I really don't want to buy any more formula! 2 cans left :)

As for the sippy, worth trying. I did the other day and she threw it at me :) haha. She drinks water great out of that but was having none of the milk.

Honestly, I could care less. She can have a bottle for as long as she wants (within reason :O) I think my older one dropped all the bottles at around 2 (drank cup during day but bottle morning and night at home).

  • We just started adding WCM to DS's formula bottles last week. It is going really well, and we will start on just WCM once this last can of formula is empty.

  • As of Friday afternoon, DD is no longer getting bottles or formula.  Once I opened the last can we had, I started introducing WCM in a sippy at meals.  At the same time, I kind of helped her drop bottles so that for the past week/week and a half, she was only getting one bottle per day.

  • I started a couple weeks ago transitioning. I did half formula and half WCM until the can of formula was gone. He has been off the bottles for like a month or so. We did that transition first. He did great with the WCM switch. Doesn't seem like he minds at all.
