Why is my milk smelling bad all of a sudden

Within the past 2 weeks I've had to throw out a few bottles of pumped milk bc they smell really funky but they are only a couple days old. There seems to be a thick fat layer and it looks chunky when I swirl it, almost like it won't mix back together. And it smells so weird! I've been bf for 5 months what's up with my pumped milk now?

Re: Why is my milk smelling bad all of a sudden

  • My milk always has the thick fat layer that looks chunky when I swirl it...once it's warmed up, the chunks disappear, so I don't think that's a problem at all.

Have you been taking any different medications or eating anything different in these past 2 weeks?  Perhaps that can affect the smell of the milk???

Have you left the milk out at room temp too long maybe???  I'm grasping at straws...

  • Sometimes breastmilk can have a soapy smell that is normal.  Have you asked a lactation consultant or the company that makes your pump?  I have a Medela pump and they have great customer service for questions like this one.  Also, breastmilk composition changes with the baby's age so maybe it looks a little different now.  The fat in breastmilk is normal.  It rises to the top in the fridge, but melts back in to the liquid once warmed.  Trust Mother Nature.
