Short term disability in MA?

Does anybody know how short term disability works in MA? I got my BFP the day after I signed an offer letter for a new job. I will have been at the new job for just about 8 months when I have the baby. Their maternity coverage does not begin until you have been there a year, so I am trying to figure out if I will be eligible for short term disability. I would ask our HR manager, but my boss recommended I not tell anybody about the pregnancy (including our HR person) until after bonuses have been decided because she didn't want me to be treated any differently. I tried looking it up online, but couldn't find much. Thanks!

Re: Short term disability in MA?

  • In Mass. you get at least 8 weeks off if you have worked for less than 1 yr and do not qualify for 12 weeks maternity. As far as short term disability, I looked into myself and I was basically told no one is willing to offer personal insurance for the purposes of of covering a "healthy" mother/baby pair during the 12 week maternity time. If you hear different I am interested...

  • My work does not offer any paid time off for Maternity leave but they offer short and long term disabilities and I will be able to quality for 8 weeks of pay throw my short term disability plan. The first two weeks I am required to use my vacation or sick time and the follow six weeks will be covered through my disability insurance. Hope this helps, good luck!
