Frozen Fruit

Warning - super dumb question I have never bought frozen fruit. Ever. For anything. I miss the variety of summer fruits I had for Mason. I am feeding him way too many fruit cups to add variety to the few seasonal fruits I can find. Even when I shell out the big bucks for fresh strawberries, blueberries, and grapes, they seem really poor quality right now. How do you prepare the frozen fruits? Do they defrost into normal blueberries, strawberries, etc that I can just serve whole? I don't want to just mix them in things, and I prefer not to make smoothies. I want more fruit to serve whole as finger food like he thrived on all summer. Are we doomed to months of apples, pears, and bananas only? Again, this may be such a stupid question, but I don't even know what the frozen fruits are like at all.

Re: Frozen Fruit

  • Frozen fruit is really good actually. I buy it all the time for Rubes.

I just pour some in a dish, thaw in the microwave for like 15 seconds (so it's still partially frozen but chewable) and serve.

For the most part really good quality. I have better luck with the one kind fruit. When you get into the mixed berries and stuff...they get a little more mushy.

    Just look for "whole" frozen.

Thanks! I was actually thinking of you when I wrote this because I remembered you mentioning using frozen fruits before. I suppose i was imagining more of the the mushy mixed berries you mentioned so I was always hesitant to try. I will try some whole fruits next time I shop.

  • Most are really really good. Pineapple chunks, blackberries, mangoes strawberries and blueberries are the biggest hit around here. The peaches are really good too but Rubes apparently doesn't love peaches all that much. I rotate between store brand and Dole depending on what I want/what's cheaper and it's all been fine. Dole has a tropical fruit blend (mangoes, pineapple and one other thing) that's good if you do want a blend. It's just the berry blends I don't like so much. Like I said, mushy.

H and I eat it all the time too. It's good. :)

  • Just make sure to read the ingredients to make sure its just fruit and if anything water. Some companies put unnecessary additives in their frozen fruit.

I forgot this too. Check the label. All mine says is "flash frozen fruit" on the ingredients list. My store brand and Dole are both safe in that dept.

  • I had the same problem as you, so decided to buy frozen.  I bought a huge 6lb bag of Dole frozen fruit (grapes, strawberries, pineapple, mango, peaches) for $9.99.  Can't beat it!

I prefer letting the fruit sit out at room temp for about 30 min before serving, rather than nuking (although I do this if I'm in a hurry).  It doesn't get as mushy.  I actually dig pieces of mango and pineapple out of the bag in the freezer all the time to satisfy my sweet tooth.
