Block feeding question

This might be a silly question but i have to ask. I am nursing in 4 hour blocks. What happens if my DS sleeps for a 4 hour stretch? So if he last ate on left side, sleeps for 4 hours, do I start with the right when he wakes or skip the right side for the next 4 hours?

Re: Block feeding question

  • When block feeding, I went by number of feedings instead of the clock. So, I would feed from the left for 2 or 3 feedings, then I'd feed from the right for 2 or 3 feedings. It was easier for me to be consistent that way, and not worry about different scenarios.

But to answer your question, if you fed from the left, then LO slept for 4 hrs, you'd feed from the right next.

  • I did what PP did too.  It went against what all the info. on block feeding says, but I didn't quite understand how you would accomplish much with time periods either.

  • I block feed based on times... roughly. In your case, if he eats on the left side, and sleeps for four hours, I'd feed on the right side for the next four hours (which usually is one feeding, but occasionally is two). Otherwise I end up with serious engorgement from going for 8 or so hours without feeding on one breast.

  • My pediatrician said that within a nursing seession, breastfeed for 15 minutes on one side, and then put the baby to the other breast for as long as he wants. For the next nursing session, reverse it. This worked great for me and I never got engorged.
