Breastfeeding

overfeeding

Ever since 3 week old ds was dxed with "breastmilk jaundice" i have been feeding him like crazy. I have os and oald, and am block feeding in 12 hour blocks.

Prior to receiving the dx, the os and oald went untreated. Ds would feed for 10 mins, and fall asleep. I figured he was just efficient. But maybe the milk imbalance lead to the jaundice, he clearly wasnt eating enough?

Now, im trying to make sure he gets enough. I feed til hes almost asleep, change diaper, feed again, burp, feed again. This lasts for over an hour. I dont mind feeding for this long, but now im nervous im overfeeding him. Currently he has been on my boob for 2hours...non stop.

He was also dxed with reflux, but it might have been the milk imbalance that was causing the fussiness. If he does have reflux, overfeeding him is a huge problem.

So, do you think he really is hungry? After the initial 10 min session is over, and he starts again, he still swallows, just not as frequently.

I know im overanalyzing, but we have so many things we are juggling right now, i just want to make sure lo is healthy.

Re: overfeeding

  • Aaaaaand hes out. Almost 3 hours later. Ive been googling while sitting here, and it appears he might be cluster feeding? I wonder if hes been wanting to do this for a long time, but i never gave him the opportunity to and just said "omg, hes fussing after eating" instead of realizing he might just still be reeeeally hungry?

And i thought i could read him. Hah!

  • He is also probably on the three week growth spurt. Let him nurse all he wants right now, he's setting your supply. GL!

  • How he is eating sounds normal for his age. I remember feeling like DS would never be off of my breast around then. But as he keeps nursing, he signals your body to start producing the right supply of milk, so go ahead and get a comfy nursing spot set up (remote to the TV, a beverage, snacks, a magazine, your mobile Bumping device... ;p ) and put your feet up! You can do it!
