Baby Names

Markella?

I have a Greek friend named Markella..I think it is so pretty! What do you all think?

I'm also considering using it, but I don't know anything about the origin and meaning of it. I know there is a St. Markella though.

Thoughts and possible info on the name please?

TIA!

Re: Markella?

  • I like this name. However I would worry about the nickname Mark. I would use it if you love it and push for NN of Ella!

I was actually thinking Kella, because I'm not a huge Ella fan.

  • NMS, but I'd use the nickname Kell or Kelli

  • Hmmm.... I think it sounds like you are trying to feminize the name Mark, and at first glance to me it is not legit. If its Greek, I think you could get away with using it if you are Greek.

Exactly. If I saw this name I'd assume the parents are Mark and Ella and they decided to name the child after themselves.

  • I like it a lot. It has a nice balance of being feminine and unique, yet not over-the-top.

Regarding nicknames, I don't know but it's difficult for me to imagine that people would start calling a girl "Mark"... :/ Ella seems more intuitive as a NN for a girl.

Finally, I'm guessing not a lot of people would consider this, but I also like the name, or nickname, "Marka". In middle school I knew a girl named Marka and was always fascinated with how "cool" it seemed next to the hundreds of Sarahs, Nicoles, Emilys, and so forth. Not saying common names are bad at all--most of us have them and don't have any problem! ;)--just that it stood out in a very positive way. I also don't recall anyone ever trying to call her "Mark". So anyway...yes, I personally like it. :)

True. Because if you're Greek, you'll buy all her things at Greek Walmart and she will play at the Greek playground. Then when she's a teenager, she'll get a car from Greek Ford, and subsequently attend "Greek Harvard". I mean, thank god if you're Greek because otherwise, she's screwed. Tongue Tied
