November 2011 Moms

What are your plans for your Xmas tree?

I already have tons of non breakable ornaments for the bottom half of the tree (we have a cat). I am still paranoid she will pull on the branches and knock the entire thing over (we have a fake tree, so it's not very heavy). Are you skipping the tree this year? Going with a small tree on a table that baby can't reach? Winging it and saying no 4518506 times in the next few weeks? Just curious as to everyone's game plan.

  • We are using our usual fake tree & we have the baby gate around it. So far he doesn't care about it, at all. Maybe it will be a distraction to him when I get around to putting the ornaments on it.

There was no way that I was going to chance him getting into the tree over & over again for the next month. Battling DS & the dog water bowl is enough for this momma.

  • I'm planning on just riding it out. If it just got horrible, I would put a gate up.

I could in no way imagine not using my tree and doing a small one. I think I love Christmas too much, plus.. I think we will have years of little ones around for Christmas so it wouldn't be just for this year.

  • We're likely either going to Home Depot and hoping they have precut trees or doing what we like to do, which is going and cutting down a tree. We normally have LO in the living room and with all his toys, etc (not even talking presents but toys he normally plays with) there wouldn't be much room to move around. Plus the entire bottom half of the tree would be stripped with needles everywhere by Christmas. We will put it in the dining portion of our kitchen so that LO (and the dog) won't get to it.

This for us! We also don't spend a ton of time in the living room where it will. We tend to spend most of the time in our loft that's basically her playroom. We will have a real tree, so it won't be up for more than a couple of weeks. I'm hoping she isn't overly interested in it ; a momma can dream, right?

  • DD1 was 10 months old her first Christmas.  She liked to look at the lights, but totally left the tree alone.  I'm just going to do what I do every year.  It may be exciting for a day or two, but it will wear off fast.

I will note that I keep my ornaments and lights up a little from the bottom of the tree, but that is because my cat likes to try and electrocute himself every year.

  • Like the other poster said before...DS liked to look at the lights and never really touched the tree, so we will do our usual decorating since I think DD will be the same.

  • We're doing our usual fake tree.  We'll re-direct away from it if needed and I suppose that if it became a major issue we'd put some kind of pen around it

This! Also, if you're worried about her pulling it over you could attach it to the wall with a rope, we had to do this one year when we had a real tree that didn't sit in the stand very well.

  • We get a real tree and position it so we can tie it to our stairs.  DS was 18 months around Christmas last year and really he just wanted to play with the non-breakable ornaments and we just let him.  I have a feeling DD will be slightly more challenging with her love of eating things off the floor.  I kind of wonder how many pine needles it will take before she decides to stop trying to eat the Christmas tree.

  • Wing it. Keep all of the breakables up high. We have 2 kitties so we are used to the cats constantly bending branches and knocking off ornaments. We will redirect as needed. I also intend on doing a smaller one in my entry way and that's blocked off by a gate so I can really do that up nicely.

  • DH's aunt brought it up to us yesterday, had no clue up until then. Put it in our usual spot and put the baby fence around it. If that option doesn't work then we will put it in the other room and block it off for him until Christmas morning.
