Talk me out of Ergo--or not!

Starters--DD is not quite 2 months old and loves being worn.  I have a Moby wrap and love it for around the house, but want a carrier, as well. I'd like something that:

1) Is easy to get on and off, especially for wearing out and about.  Love my wrap, but haven't found it easy to use for running errands.

2) Will take us from now until she's too old to be worn.

3) DH can get into--he likes the idea of a carrier but doesn't get into the sling/wrap/woven thing.  (He tried the Moby and looked so uncomfortable lol!)

4) Obviously, good for DD support-wise and as easy as possible on my back :)

Everyone I've known who's had Ergo has loved it, but of course I don't want to drop over $100 unless I'm sure it's the best choice for us.  So--for what I want--is Ergo best?  Or would you recommend something else?

Re: Talk me out of Ergo--or not!

  • I still use my Ergo and ring sling. If you can, borrow one to try on. Structured carriers need to fit more precisely than a wrap or sling.

My Ergo has seen much more action than my stroller, and people drop $100+ on those all the time.

  • We used the Ergo from 4 months to 10 months and we both loved it. My son started walking at 8 months so by 10 months he was done with being worn and sitting in a stroller, but I would have easily used it through toddlerhood if he wanted to. I feel like we definitely got our money's worth for the 7 months that we used it, though.

  • Still wear DD in the Ergo and she is almost 3 and weighs 35lbs. Worth every penny

  • I've had an AngelPack, a Balboa sling, a Moby wrap, and a Born carrier. I love my Ergo!

It is slightly harder to snap in the back than the AngelPack, but so much better for your back and very comfy. I wore my son until he turned 2 and decided he wanted to walk everywhere.

I love that Petunia Pickle Bottom sells several of their designs to Ergo (slightly addicted). I actually bought some as gifts for baby showers when I found them on sale through Amazon.

  • Keep in mind also that most nice carriers have an EXCELLENT resale value, so whatever you decide to purchase you can resell when you are done and get back 75 of what you spent.

To answer your question though, why not consider a mei tai. You can find some for cheaper than 100, and used is actual preferred because they are more broken in. A lot of complaints about SSC like the ergo is baby not being able to see as much, but with a mei tai you'll be able to tie baby higher up on your back and they'll be able to see the same view as you.

  • Do you have a local baby-wearing group? They might have different options for you to try before you buy.

In any case, I love our Ergo and we still use it.

  • I'd note that it might not take you all the way to "too old to be worn".  Sure, it *can* carry a two or three year old, but the seat isn't really wide enough to properly support them.  Of course, I just think this means you get the Ergo (or other SSC you like) now, and "size up" if you find you're still using it in two or three years and LO is too big for it.  This is what we did.

  • We started with an Ergo for DS1, but then I switched to a Beco Butterfly and liked it a lot more. See if you can try one out before you decide. We've definitelyy gotten a ton of use out of all our carriers.

  • I love our ergo. My favorite for that age in the cooler weather though was actually the Moby. I would wrap it before I left, put my coat on, then stock DD in when we got to our location and wrap my coat around her if it was cold. It was actually my favorite for running errands. I hate coats and take them off as soon as I'm inside, so the ergo is actually a pain because I don't like to wear it over my coat, which means I have to remove my coat in the cold in order to put to on, kwim?

  • I love our Ergo. DD is 2.5 and I still use it. Not a lot but she's always in there when I go grocery shopping and when we travel too. I got it when she was 4 months old and it has been well worth the money.

Other than the crappy Baby Bjorn I haven't used anything else so I can't compare it but I have never regretted buying it.

  • Thanks all!  Input and experiences much appreciated! For the record, I have no issue spending the money--I just over-research pretty much everything so I really appreciate hearing lots of opinions!  I think the Ergo may be our best bet--I did get a chance to "play" with one at a friend's place and liked it.  Now to pick which color...

  • I love our Ergo (sport).  DD#3 spends a silly amount of time in it almost everyday (while I deal with the older two!)........and the older two still fight about being carried in it if DD#3 is in the stroller for any reason.  I can actually still back carry my 4 year old, as she's only 32lbs.  It is definitely harder to carry the older two (DD#2 is 26lbs) - but still doable!

  • My DD is 17 months old and I still wear her in the Ergo on my back. She loves it and it's still comfortable for me. She is not a fan of the vacuum and the only way I can do it while she's awake (without her following me around crying) is to wear her in the Ergo on my back!

  • I love my ergo. Wore DD until I was pg again and couldn't physically do it. Actually put her in it again when DS was a week or two old because she was feeling babyish with the new arrival and she still fits. Bought a lillebaby which has some great features but I still prefer my ergo. You can also use the infant insert or a rolled up blanket to prop them up higher when they want to see more. I especially loved it because I could get DD to sleep in it nine out of ten times.
