Baby Names

Cringe Worthy

A FB friend of mine is expecting their second child very soon. They already have a little girl named Emilee. They were hoping for a boy this time and were going to name him Mason. Turns out they are having another girl and liked the name Mason so much they still plan on using it for DD #2 except they'll be spelling it Maesyn!

Re: Cringe Worthy

  • I know a girl named this spelled Maison. I like "y" so I choose names that are supposed to have a Y in them!!!!

  • I don't get why people think Y is an okay substitute for every O, E, I, etc. Just say NO!!!

  • I think it's fine.
    ... And not boring.
... And not on the top 100 names for girls, so kudos to them.
  • Yuck.  Mason is no where near gender neutral.  And I hope they never tell her they liked it for a boy and then decided to keep it for her and respell it.  She will have enough grief in her life without her parents making it sound like they were mourning Mason that much.

Oh dear.  Maison?  As in "house"? :/  That's bad...I mean, in my opinion, all misspellings, err...creative variations make the parent look pretty uneducated, but to misspell a name so that it is actually a common word in a foreign language.  Yikes.  Sure, the pronunciation is different in this case.  But on paper, those parents have made their daughter look like a fool to, well, pretty much every person with even the slightest grasp of the French language. I mean, seriously.

Anyway,  op, yeah, that's pretty ridiculous.  I mean, it's currently one of the most popular boys names at that...sticking a y in it certainly doesn't feminize it.  I'll never understand the y=girl name concept.  Why not choose a similar, legitimately feminine name?  Any of the ones listed here by Peridot would be lovely.

    That's probably because it's not really a girl's name...

With the spelling of "Emilee," I didn't have high expectations.
    True that!

I'm just imagining that conversation later on.

"Mommy, how did you come up with my name?"
"Well, we really wanted a boy and wanted to name him Mason. We then found out it was a girl, and so we just used the same name on you. But since you're a girl, we spelled it girlie".
"So I have this stupid spelling because you wanted a boy?"
"No. We just liked the name."
"Oh, so why not Mason like this?"
    "Because it's a boy's name."
    "But this way is not?"

    I agree.

I also know someone who named her daughter Mason, but she spelled it differently.

  • Awful!
