August 2012 Moms

Reading to LO?

When do you think is a good time to start reading to your baby? Should I have already started (he's 12 weeks tomorrow), or does it not make a difference quite yet? Reading is really important to me, so I really want to read to August a lot and hopefully pass that love for books on to him. I'm just not sure when to start.

Any input is appreciated!

Re: Reading to LO?

  • Eventually I'd like to read to her regularly but right now it's just a once in a while thing, sometimes she's more into it than others. I have been reading for her since she was a few weeks old. I've asked for books for her for Christmas since she has tons of clothes and isn't too interested in the toys she has. Reading is important to me too. I'm going to try to work it into our evening routine eventually.

  • I was reading to him every night when he was a few weeks old, but I haven't in quite a while. We need more books, and I need to stop slacking. I started singing to him more often. He loves it

  • I try to read 2-5 books to her everyday  (and have since she was a couple of weeks old), but lately it's only been about every other day.  I started reading A Series of Unfortunate Events to her last night and she lasted about 15 pages before she fell asleep.  Guess it's too early for that one!

  • Our librarian friend told me to start reading to LO as early as possible and it could even be the newspaper.

We read at least one book before bed. DD is starting to like the pictures which is fun.

  • I don't do it as much as I'd like. When I do sometimes she lets me read 5, other times I can't get through 5 pages. Depends on if she likes the pictures or not. I try for a few times a week at the very least

  • My daughter practices her reading with him as her little buddy. I read to both my kids when my daughter gets out of school...with my daughter I didn't start till 6 months.

  • I read DD a short story before bed.  She likes to look at the pictures.  You could start now. Make it part of your bedtime routine.

  • We have since day one. She seems to like it, but it's probably more for me at this point. Gives us something fun to do when I run out of things to talk about it. It definitely couldn't hurt to start now.
  • I do. He pays attention and coos along. Its never too early to read to a child...the more vocabulary they're exposed to, the better!

  • We do one or two books a day. We both lay on the floor and I hold a board book up above us. She loves it and so do I! Her eyes get all adorably buggy when I turn the page.

  • H reads to him every morning before he goes to work while I eat my toast and drink my tea. They usually get through 3 to 5.

Then I might read him two or three books throughout the day.

H sometimes reads to him when he gets home from work 2 or 3.

Then I usually get through one before bed. Last night we read four before he was done. So that's 8 to 15 a day. Many of them are super short like Moo, Baa, La La La or Baby Anomals so tha'd why it seems like so many. Some are longet too though. He's just starting to sit for slightly longer books.
