Am I safe to assume that high school was the last educational institution that this friend attended?
That is hilarious!
Raising 2 amazing step-sons while ttc since 2006. Moved to adoption 11/2011 with one more IVF attempt to go...YEA! 2 healthy heartbeats May 2012! My girls have arrived!
Am I safe to assume that high school was the last educational institution that this friend attended?
I know plenty of people who only gradutated at the high school level and don't add letters to their childrens name. I think it's rude to assume high school graduates are uneducated. With the economy the way it is...not everyone can afford to go on to college.
This is what bothers me with made up spellings. Parents, and then the children, insist upon how it is supposed to sound, but that just isn't possible. There are spelling and phonetic rules for a reason.
Your friend named her daughter Charl-Yee no matter what she tells herself. I'd assume he daughter was a Chinese man.

I actually laughed out loud at this! You are so right.

First, it was intended to be a harmless joke. Second, if I intimated anything, it was that people who can't spell might have poor education - not that people who have poor education can't spell (kind of like the "all whales are mammals, but not all mammals are whales" idea). AND I don't believe that anyway. I know plenty of people who attended doctoral school with me who can't spell to save their lives. I was just having a little fun and I apologize if you took offense.

That's just how it sounded.I simply stated my opinion as well. I don't really think high school equates poor education.

And the least intelligent person I know graduated from college, so it looks like we are actually in agreement. I recognize that tone and intent are difficult to discern with any form of written communication, but I assure you that my initial comment was meant to be lighthearted. Again, I apologize if you found it offensive.

I just totally laughed out loud! Too funny!
But that is my exact thoughts no matter how you choose to spell it there are rules and you can't defy them and think it is right.
June 2006-married Bug...
April 2009-gave birth to Pinky...
January 2012-gave birth to Cakes

I only have a high school education and my kids names are spelled just fine thanks.
See discussion above. It was intended to be a lighthearted joke, and even with the joke, I in no way suggested that everyone without post-secondary education is a poor speller. It was the inverse presumption - that everyone who is a poor speller is without post-secondary education. And even that presumption was nothing more than a joke, playing into stereotypes. I've already apologized to the last person who took offense (even though the offense in both cases was to something other than my intent), so I'm sorry to you as well for the misunderstanding between what was said and what was inferred.
The "Y" makes no sense. I hope the mother understands her daugher's name will always be mispronounced because people will try to pronounce the name the way it is spelled.

Now back to hating on this awful name!
Charlyee shouldn't even sound like Charlie!

This. Charlie is bad enough spelled normally.
I've seen so many people add random letters and just claim they're silent.
Like Aurelia. (The L is silent) *FACEPALM*
I should change my legal name to Tracohoel. The T and O's are silent.
