Preemies

When did your preemie cut their first tooth?

Our little girl hasn't cut her first tooth yet but I believe she might be starting to teeth.  She has been drooling more and chewing on he fingers.  She was born almost 3 months premature so I wasn't sure if her teeth would come later than the norm or what.  Just wondering what your experiences have been! :)

Re: When did your preemie cut their first tooth?

  • I think for preemies (as well as FT) it can be pretty much all over the place.  My DS (a 29 weeker) got his first tooth at around 8 months and still only has his two bottom teeth. He's been chewing on his hands a lot lately (never has been much of a drooler) so he may be getting his uppers some time soon. DS slept like poo for about 2 weeks while that first tooth was coming in. Hope it goes smoother for your LO!

  • DS cut his first tooth the day before he turned 7 months (5 months adjusted)...he's now 9 months and has 3 teeth!  One of the babies in his play group is 3 weeks younger (born full term though, so technically she's about a month older gestionally) and she doesn't have any teeth yet, so it really depends on each individual.

This is pretty accurate.  Judith was a 29 weeker, and cut her first 2 teeth around 9m actual, then didn't cut any more until after her first birthday when the rest of her front teeth came in.  Those were the easy ones: she was teething with the molars and canines for 6 months before the molars cut, and the canines followed shortly after.  Now we're working on the 2 year molars with no end in sight.

If you're curious about the order and approximately when certain teeth emerge, this colorful chart might be helpful.  There are different charts out there that you can Google if you want something different, but having some type of chart bookmarked is pretty handy!

You're working on 2 year molars already?  Man, I wish DD would have been an early teether to get it done and over with.

Her bottom 2nd molars are almost completely through and we're just waiting on the tops.  But I swear I felt the bottoms start poking through about 2 months ago.  It's been foreverrrrrrr.

OP - I forget when DD cut her first teeth and probably have it written down somewhere.  But yeah, teething is one of those things that is definitely alllllll over the place.

Don't let teeth scare you!  DD nursed past 2 and had plenty of teeth and never bit me.

  • Corri took for-freaking-ever to get a tooth, she didn't get her first one till she was 10 months old and now, at 2 years and almost 9 months old, is STILL missing her two year molars, lol!
  • my son just cut his today!!! he is just about 5 m 2 w actual and 3 m 2 w adjusted... those were the exact signs he had. He wasn't really fussy and didn't drool a ton. the other day I noticed a white spot under his tooth. Within 4 days his tooth has broken through!
