DH has decided that we're going to have people over tomorrow afternoon for an oyster roast. Obviously we will have oysters, saltines, butter, tabasco, and beer. What else should I serve?
ETA: And cocktail sauce, of course. With lots of horseradish.
OH! I am so jealous! So so jealous. I would serve ham biscuits and maybe a little cheese penny or something. You know like those ones they have in the freezer section of HT that you slice and bake.

Ham biscuits would be great!
Also thinking maybe pimento cheese and crackers? Or cream cheese, pepper jelly, and crackers?
I have no business in this thread either since I've never been to an oyster roast. But some girl on my BMB mentioned oysters a couple days ago and I've been craving them ever since. Now you just made it worse.
I'm jelly of your party. Big time. Invite pls?
Of course you're invited! Can you be in NC by 3:30pm tomorrow?
Kind of but not really. Most clam bakes I've been to involve steaming clams along with corn, sausage, red potatoes, and shrimp, and everything/everyone is served together and they can happen at any time of the year.
Oyster roasts involve standing around in cool/cold weather (oysters are only in season in months that end in "r"), drinking beer or bourbon and eating the oysters as they are roasted/shucked, so it's more of an ongoing process than an actual meal. Your husband shucks an oyster, you dip it in melted butter and then cocktail sauce, put it on a saltine, and then eat the bejeezus out of it. Rinse/repeat.

Yes I also love both of those, and celery is good with the pimento cheese. Sorry my husband doesn't eat cold cheese because he is a weirdo so I forget.
Better because the oysters aren't very heavy. You just get a bunch of energy from eating it, kinda like sushi. So to me it is the BEST thing to eat before going out (next to sushi). I know that sounds weird but its just so so yummy!
My dad used to have annual oyster roasts for his business (family business so lots of relatives and friends came). It was pretty much a potluck and people brought all sorts of different foods. Considering he hasn't had a roast since I was about 8, I don't really remember much other than desserts.
I have to LOL at the salad suggestions. I've never been to an oyster roast that involved salad. Anything else that is a finger food and is good for outside in colder weather. Ham biscuits, chips and various dips, veggie tray, hot Virginia dip, maybe Brunswick stew if you can set up a crock pot, cheese tray.

How about some cowboy cavier with some Frito Scoops?!? Good stuff and they serve it at all the oyster roasts in Charleston.
Have fun'

Is Brunswick stew a finger food?
LOL not so much.
I wasn't being serious. I guess my sarcasm isn't working very well

Got it. That's why I was asking.
I hosted my first clam bake a couple years ago. After cleaning and cooking almost 250 clams, I couldn't even think about them without gagging.

Holy crap- I can't believe I have never been to one of these
Jealous does not even describe what I am feeling right now.

It was one of the things I also craved most when I was preg. Bad thing is I don't like them very cooked and that is prob not the best idea.

lawl, you crazy.
What about dirty rice, red beans and rice, rice and peas, jambalaya, etc?
You can never go wrong with a spinach salad, either.
Enjoy! It sounds awesome!

Y'all are lucky I love you so dearly. Mrs. Ell, too.

But Oysters...yummmmmmmmy.
Okay, so according to the hubs we will serve:
Oysters with all the fixins
Peel & eat shrimp w/ Old Bay
Hot crab dip
Pimento cheese & crackers
Some sort of vegetable-y finger food TBD
Beer
Cokes for those who bring their own bourbon
Sounds good!
What time should I be there and what should I bring? Some wine perhaps?
Holy crap- I can't believe I have never been to one of these

Beer, bourbon, oysters= sex
