I'm "doctor shopping" in Rochester Hills.....have already talked to Dr. Chung and Dr. Mavani. I really liked Dr. Mavani; I'm wondering if anyone else on here goes to her or has other recommendations for pediatricians in this area? TIA!
We go to North East Pediarics on Barclay Circle. There are about 7 doctors and several PA's but we almost always see Dr. Antone. He has privileges at Crittenton and Troy Beaumont, if that matters to you.
Before I had kids, I sold medical equipment and knew most of the doctors in SE Michigan. NE Pediatrics was one of the best practices I worked with, always loved all the doctors. WE live near Clarkston, so it's a drive for us but totally worth it, or so we found out, the hard way. 3 months ago, I attempted to switch to a doctor closer to our home since most of our well visits are done and it's a PITA to drive so far for sick visits. (my kids are 3 and 6). I took DD in for a sports physical to the new doctor and mentioned she had been having a lot of poop accidents at school, lots of skid marks, etc. The new doctor treated DD like she was just a lazy, bad kid and humiliated her for having accidents, even though I said it was totally out of character for her. (She's my 6yo.)
A week later, it hadn't improved but DD didn't have a fever or any signs of illness. I called the new doctor back and asked to get in for a sick visit since I knew something wasn't right. The receptionist made me feel like an idiot and told me if DD had been having accidents for a month already and no other "symptoms" it didn't sound like it qualified as a sick visit and she could get me in the following week. (This was on a Thursday) .
Friday, DD came home from school with poop in her pants again. Not like a full blown BM but enough to let me know she was not able to control her bowel. I called NE pediatrics because I'd had enough of it. The nurse told me it simply is not normal for a 6 yo to have poop accidents at school and to bring DD right in. Even though DD looked fine, had no temp, etc, the doctor still wanted to do a finger prick to run some blood tests. Her white count came back sky high. He then collected a stool sample and sent it to the lab for a 24 hour culture. The results came back that DD had an uncommon parasite, probably something that our dogs brought into our house after mucking around in the swamp behind our house. The doctor called me with the results on Saturday evening and we got DD on antibiotics right away. The problem was cleared up before DD even went back to school on Monday.
I love NE pediatrics because they didn't treat me like a crazy mom, they treated my daughter with kindness and respect, they were (and ALWAYS are) very accommodating with appointments, they ran appropriate tests without being overly invasive, and they go the extra mile. I have a son who has sensory processing disorder which is more of a developmental problem than a medical one. When DS was diagnosed by an OT and a neurologist, Dr. Antone admitted he didn't know that much about it, since it wasn't covered when he was in med school. He asked if I minded if he shared info about my son with the mother of another patient, who happened to be a pediatric OT. I told Dr. Antone it was fine and as a matter of fact, he could even share my son's medical records if he thought it would be useful (he declined, said he would prefer just to talk about my son without sharing any identifying info due to privacy laws). Dr. Antone called me back a few weeks later in the evening and we actually talked for over an hour about my son. I really feel he goes the extra mile and I have no idea how there are enough hours in the day to give each patient the degree of attention that we have been given.
Another time when dd was three, she had a pretty bad bump on the head. The physician on call that night (not Dr. Antone) said it wasn't necessary to take her to the ER since they would just wait and watch her like we could. The doctor told me what to watch for over the next several hours. She called me back at 9pm to check in and then she called me back at 12am for another check in. When I told her we had not seen any of the indications of a concussion at the 12am check in, she told me to check DD one more time at 3am but that the worst of my worries were over and I should do my best to get to sleep myself and just set an alarm rather than stand vigil over DD's bed. The doctors there care as much for the parents of their patients as they do the kids.
I can't stress enough how good this place has been to our family. We will never again try to change doctors and we will gladly make the drive.
Thanks for your response! I did visit their office last weekend (great facility!) and talked to a nurse practitioner, and got a pretty good vibe about the place, but was disappointed that I didn't get to talk to any of the doctors or tour the office. It is good to hear such an enthusiastic recommendation!
