A stupid question about the home visit

So, here's a dumb question...when the social worker comes to our house, should we less prominently display our bottles? Neither my partner nor I drink, but we keep liquor and wine bottles on display, first because we have very little storage in the house, second, because some of the bottles are pretty, and third because we have family over frequently and they are wind drinkers. I just wonder if maybe have the bottle of maker's mark right next to our Huge Jar of shells collected from around the world might make us look like we're drinkers or something. Or am I being completely ridiculous?

  • LOL I don't know, but I could see myself making this post when we're ready for the home visit. I'm sure it would be fine to leave them, though.

  • Our SW told us on our 1st meeting (visit was the 4th meeting) that that stuff didn't matter. She said she was not looking for cleanliness or beer in the fridge, etc. but do what you feel is right. We have some wine bottles displayed in our kitchen above the cabinets and I didn't even give it a 2nd thought :)

  • Ha!  I worry about the exact same thing.  We have mostly "pretty" bottles, or souvenier type bottles, and I plan on packing them up.  My husband thinks I am being ridiculous, and I probably am.  LOL.

  • I'm sure this might be different if you live in a dry county orin an area where social drinking is culturally frowned upon, but this didn't matter at all for us.  We have a wine fridge, a bar, a wine cellar, and a wine rack, not to mention my husband collects corks and makes cork boards as a hobby and to give as gifts.  None of this raised an eyebrow or earned a remark.
  • It will depend on the HS and who's doing it. I think for FC they recommend keeping it out of reach. However, for our DIA, we had the interview portion of the home visit next to our 2 (very full) wine tables. When in doubt, ask your SW
  • It's probably not a big deal, at least it wasn't for us.  If you feel uncomfortable  with them being out or that it may show you in a different light than you are usually, maybe you can put them in a closet or garage for now.  I bet it's going to be fine though...just don't offer her shots right when she walks in.  :)

  • Out alcohol had to be locked away for our FC home study. We put it in the cabinet above the fridge and put a magnetic lock on it. That satisfied the home study inspection.

  • LOL - I am not a big drinker, but reading your post has caused me to pour myself a glass of wine.  It is Friday night after all and we are waiting for the Chinese delivery man so why not.  :D
