So unfortunately year ago, about 13 to be exact, I unknowingly contracted HSV1 on my genitals. I learned about a week later that I had it and was stunned. Emotionally it was heartbreaking. I had an initial outbreak and then nothing for about 10 yrs. I have had two mild outbreaks since then, but nothing for about 2 years now. My Dr. says that I need to go on valtrex as a suprressive therapy. I was just wondering if anyone else was on this or had some issues. I know it is neccessary in order to have a vaginal delivery bc HSV! can be harmful to a baby, even fatal if born and you have an outbreak. I am just worried about the meds. Everything I looked up said it was fine to take during the third trimester, just don't like to take meds. Anyone else going through this?

Re: Valtrex question
This!! Take the freaking meds to protect your child. Even if you are planning on a c/s I would take them just in case baby comes early.
Thanks ladies. I wasn't questioning whether to save my baby, just was asking if anyone was on such a high dose. I would do anything for my child, but just wanted to make sure it was safe first. I have an appt on monday and will be checking in with her. It is just nerve racking sometimes because you never know what some meds will do, and I hate the idea of toxic substances going to my baby, but agree that if it is best for my child I will do it. Just was wondering if there were other ladies on it or not. Thanks!!!
I don't have genital herpes, but oral herpes and when I have a breakout I was told valtrex is fine to take while pregnant. I hadn't had a breakout for years before DD was born, but since I have had two breakouts and want to protect her from that (plus it being on my lip makes keeping it away from her a bit difficult). If I had genital herpes I wouldn't hesitate to take valtrex in order to have a safe vaginal delivery.
You do what you gotta do!
