Babies: 3 - 6 Months

add rice myself or enfamil a.r.?

my poor little 3 month old has been so super fussy lately. i realized after calling the pediatrician it's probably reflux. she also had issues with constipation before this. the ped said to add rice to formula. i am afraid she will get totally constipated again and we will just go from fussiness about reflux to fussiness about being constipated. is it better to add the rice myself or to use enfamil a.r.? i read reviews of it that people said it didn't constipate their babies when other things did. i just want to help her be happy again. help!

  • Use oatmeal instead of rice.

  • We have done both.  We got samples of the Enfamil AR from our ped and used those til they were gone and then just started adding rice to the regular Enfamil Infant (we still had lots left over before we got the okay from ped to start adding rice).  I went to buy more of the AR because I had coupons, but the store was sold out, so we've just stuck to adding rice to the regular fromula and it seems to work great.  We've gone from crazy projectile spit up to just very small amounts rarely, and LO seems way happier.  We add 1 Tbsp of rice cereal to about 4-5 oz of formula.  You can play with the consistency more if you add the rice yourself I think.  I was worried about constipation too, but we haven't had any issues.  I usually do at least one bottle a day that is just regular formula, no rice.  Hope that helps, and good luck!

  • I used to do oatmeal ( better for constipation) but found Similac spit up worked better then the Enfamil AR for us. It has added rice also.  A couple of times when I have had to pick up the Enfamil instead I notice more spit up immediately

  • We used AR with my first DS and it made him incredibly constipated.  This time around we have this little guy on a higher dose of Zantac and have chosen to "deal" with the spit up.  He seems fine with spitting up and I never wanted him to go through the terrible constipation his brother went through.
