C-sections

I want to drive

It has been three weeks and one day since my c-section and I am desperate to drive.  I haven't driven a car in nearly a month and I can't wait.  When did your doc give you the go ahead to get back in the drivers seat?

Re: I want to drive

  • My nurse said 2 weeks but I drove 1 week later. As long as you feel comfortable and aren't on some crazy drugs, I would drive.

  • I was told to stay in til 1 week. After that, I could be DRIVEN places the 2nd week. Then the 3rd week I could drive. I felt fine by then too.

  • The OB told me that I could drive when I stopped taking the narcotics and I could "hop out of bed without thinking about it".  I drove about 1.5 weeks after my section, it was not super comfortable.

I'm am not allowed to lift LO in her carseat until 6 week post section.  So I didn't drive much until about week 4, then I would take the carseat out to the car and then take LO out and put her in the seat.  I started lifting/carrying LO in her carseat around 5 weeks, because it was such a hassle to take her in/out of the carseat in the car.  I try not to do it too often, but it's getting colder here, so popping the carseat into a shopping cart or the snap n go seems like a better option.

  • I'm 2 weeks out from my c-section and I plan on attempting to do a trial drive this weekend with my hubby. My doc said as long as I feel comfortable and am not on painkillers and don't lift anything heavier than baby, I should be fine.

If I had transportation during the week, I probably would have waited another week or so, but LO has appointments, and honestly I just want to be able to get out of the house a bit, even if it is just to the store for more diapers.

  • I was told I could as long as I could stomp on the brake and wasn't taking loritab. However, I couldn't lift the baby into the truck in her carrier until about 8 weeks pp, so I didn't drive much even when I could.

  • I was given zero activity restrictions and drove at one week, no issue.

  • I actually have been driving short trips only a few times this week but the problem is the car seat.  I am only three weeks out from my surgery and I am desperate to get out of the house.  Darn.  Looks like I will be staying in the house longer than expected.  I am so desperate to get out of the house.

Now I'm confused. You aren't driving, or you are?  Regardless, you need to ask your OB when you can lift LO in the car seat. I was cleared for this at 2 weeks, along with driving (minus my pain meds).

  • I wasn't given explicit instructions with DD but drove twelve days after she was born, and two weeks after DS was born.

  • 2 weeks was the rule with my first. I waited the 2 weeks, there are reasons for it!

  • I had my c-section on the 5th and I was driving myself to the NICU to see my boys on the 15th.  And I would have driven earlier- but the 13th and 14th were a weekend so my DH drove us there.  I was no longer on prescription pain killers and had a super easy recovery... Oh and my Dr wanted me to not drive for 6 weeks- like that was going to happen.
  • I saw my doctor 10 days post-surgery and she cleared me to drive. I had been off any narcotics for several days at that point. She doesn't want me lifting anything heavier than DD2 in her car seat, but other than that, I'm good! :)

I remember it being longer with DD1 before I could drive, but that was awhile ago...

  • I drove at 2 weeks pp after both my kids.  If you want to that bad and aren't on pain meds, go for a short drive and see how you feel.

  • I drove just after two weeks without an issue while DH stayed home with DS.  I took DS out in the car with me around three weeks, and got tired quickly after lugging him around.  No pain, just soreness.

I was given a two week restriction, and felt ready after about a week and a half.

  • I drove the second time shortly after. First time not so much because I had staples and it was much more uncomfortable for me. I wouldn't be taking a 3 hour drive, but if you need to go to the store, I don't see why you shouldn't go.
