I know...another solids question

So my DD turned 4 months yesterday. For several reasons including the fact that she WAAAAYYYY over eats her formula, the pedi told me to start her on solids, starting with cereal, and working up to 3 meals a day. Well. We have tried for the past 3 days and every time I put some in her mouth, she starts bawling and eventually spits it out. At first I thought she was tired but she does it every time. I know she likes it because if I put it in a bottle with more formula, she takes it just fine.

I'm assuming maybe she isn't ready, but who knows. Anyone else have any experiences? My DS loved his cereal from the first try to I never had this issue!

  • It sounds like she isn't ready.  I did a lot of reading on starting solids this week and read that if this happens, just wait a week or a few days and then try again.

  • Have you tried doing a smaller bottle first and then doing some cereal? That way she isn't starving so may be more willing to try it? We also just started on cereal and it took her and us a couple of days to get the hang of it. And little bits at a time, last night we actually finished a tablespoon. The ped also said to adjust the thickness, sometimes they like a different consistency. I think mostly it's trial and error and learning together. GL!

Even a minor event in the life of a child is an event of that child's world and thus a world event.

Yeah that too.  You shouldn't be trying it when she is really hungry because she'll just get frustrated.

  • Thanks guys for the advice! I do give her half a bottle before hand so I know she isn't starving, but still hungry enough that she should still want to eat. I'll try it a few more days and if we are still having issues maybe wait a week and try again. Or maybe try another food.

You may want to also try offering her something other than cereal. She may not like it. My DD doesn't like it at all but she loves other foods. She fights the cereal.

DS hated rice cereal and so we tried oatmeal... and he hated it too. Then I mixed it with apple sauce instead and he ate it just fine. Have you actually tasted that stuff? It is disgusting and I don't blame DS for not wanting to eat it plain. He also didn't like it if it was too liquidy.
