potty training regression?

DS has been trained since August and doing great.  For the past 2 weeks, however, he's having accidents everyday that he goes to school.  It has been only pee accidents until now.  Originally, I thought the girls at his school weren't helping enough (and I'm still not sure).  But, this week, he pooped his pants at home (Tues) and at school (Wed).  I've heard of regression but thought that was during the "training" phase.

In addition, he's been sleeping a lot more than normal and not eating as much.  I'm bringing him to the pedi today but wondered if anyone else is/has dealt with anything like this.  I'm hoping to cancel out anything physical issues today.

Re: potty training regression?

  • Yes. DS has been trained almost a year now and during the past few weeks (it was about 6 weeks into the start of school) he started with accidents. First pee and then poop at school mostly. I talked with his teacher about it and she said likely he is too busy to be bothered to stop doing what he is doing to go to the bathroom. They are keeping an eye on him and they told him (and advised me to do the same) if he poops he's going to have to clean himself up. I'm fine with that.

The pee accidents since have subsided and then it was poop accidents in the afternoon when he stayed for lunch (it's extended time from 12-2). I think he is trying to hold it for some reason. Yesterday he made it without accidents when he was at school all day.

He has pretty much stopped eating most things he would normally eat. He is a picky eater and believe me we have tried all the advice and tricks but this is something else. I think the decrease in eating a variety of foods is causing constipation issues. I also think he is turning into a maniac b/c of all of this. It's been a rough few weeks. I am considering taking him to the pedi as well for the constipation and as you said, to rule out anything physical.

  • Thank you both for replying.  Pedi said he is "backed up."  She listened to his belly and said he is really sluggish.  She said being constipated puts a lot of pressure on his bladder which causes the pain and extra pressure once he starts to pee - he can't stop.  She said this happens a lot because one poop may have been painful, so he tries to avoid going which just makes the problem worse . . . or he just doesn't want to stop playing and go - which leads to constipation too.  Overall, this just ran him down so he was sleepy and lost his appetite too.

So, it's been a fun night of suppositories and Miralax - a 24 hour cleanse for a 3 year old is not a good time.  :)

    Thanks again!
