Cloth Diapering

peeing out of diapers?

i know cloth dipes arent as absorbent as disposables but, it seems like every time he wears cloth, he pees out of it!  he is a heavy wetter but i usually try to change him after a couple hours.  so far, we've tried rumparooz aio, best bottom aio and flip newborns with microfiber inserts and its happened with all of them.  any suggestions?

sorry for the lazy typing, i'm nursing and posting.

Re: peeing out of diapers?

  • Did you happen to use fabric softener? It sounds like there's some sort of coating on them that's making them repel water.
  • are the diapers fully saturated or are they leaking without absorbing anything? If the inserts are all totally wet, then he needs to be changed more often or you need to add absorbancy. If they're not totally wet, either the fit isn't right or else they're repelling. Hopefully that at least helps you narrow it down!

  • No.  I prepped them with homemade detergent-washing soda, baking soda and oxi-clean, and wash them in the same thing.

  • If he is only a few weeks old he just probably isn't big enough for the AIOs.  I'd recommend just checking the fit around the legs, and you might just need to wait a few weeks for the chub to appear.

  • He's almost 7 weeks and is starting to get a little chubby (we struggled with weight gain).  I guess I'll use one more pack of disposables until they fit better.  Thanks ladies!

  • DS did that when we tried to use aio's with him as a nb (lil joeys and bumgenius). The lil joeys worked great for about a week, and then they started leaking. I tried everything before accepting that he was either not fitting them as well as it seemed or had too much pee for them to hold. Eventually, I sold off my nb aios and went to prefolds and covers until he started fitting our OS dipes. Since then, it's been great.
