Are you allowed to go into labor on your own and then rcs?

Will doctors let you go into labor on your own but still plan for a c/s??

Honestly, that is one of the only reasons I want to try for a VBAC... I know, it sounds weird.  But that is the biggest regret I have from my whole pregnancy experience, that I never got to feel what it is like to go into labor on my own.  I feel like I missed out on all of the excitment of saying "It's time to go!"  If that makes any sense.

I was induced at 39 weeks and 3 days for high blood pressure.  I KNOW my body just wasn't ready for labor yet.  I get really upset sometimes that I didn't get to go through all of that.  So I was just wondering if they would let me go into labor and then still go with a c/s when I got to the hospital.

Re: Are you allowed to go into labor on your own and then rcs?

  • I went into labor 3 days before my scheduled c/s and since things were moving along, I decided to try for a vbac.  I loved being able to labor and experience contractions, etc.  However, I still ended up with a c/s after 18 hours of labor.

My doctor was willing to let me labor and see what happened.  He did give me the option of having the c/s right when I arrived at the hospital but I chose not to.

This time--we're heading straight for surgery if the baby decides to come before his scheduled c/s date.

  • well,I know that my hospital/dr wanted to reserve the OR/time/staff.  I scheduled my rcs but I went into labor early (week 36 I went into labor, they had my rcs scheduled for week 39).  I was in labor for 3 days but didnt progress.  They didnt want to take him until I was 37 wks so 1 hr into my 37th week I had my rcs (I had no interest in vbac).  The labor I did have wasnt fun.  I was more than happy to have that rcs :-)  So, bottom line is you may need to actually schedule the rcs.

  • I believe one of the main reasons that c/s are scheduled for the 39th week is that it is easier on your body if you aren't in labor prior to surgery and you have less chance of going into labor prior to 39w.  Labor is tough on your body, surgery is tough on your body, so laboring prior to surgery is brutal on your body.  Yes it can be done (I labored for 18+ hours prior to my unplanned c/s), but I don't think that most dr's would recommend you allowing your body to go into labor prior to a c/s just for fun, unless you were hoping to attempt a VBAC.

  • I am a candidate for a vbac, at least right now I am, but they will probably be concerned that I'll be too small to get the next one out too.  I was told that they will let me vbac if it is before my due date, but a rsc will be scheduled for 40 weeks.  And that they don't induce (which I am completely fine with)  I was induced with Parker and then 28 hours and 3 hours of pushing later, ended in a c/s.  I got it from both ends!  We'l'l just see how it all plays out I guess, the next time I do get KU.... I was just curious!

  • My (new) doctor told me she is completely fine with me trying for a VBAC, but if we were to go with a RCS, she mentioned it's easier for them to do it around 39 weeks.  I was conflicted because I went overdue with my first.

We decided we'll schedule the CS at 40 weeks, but if I go into labor on my own before that, I can do the Trial of Labor and see if I can have a successful VBAC.  I'm very excited about the possibility of doing this...but completely prepared for CS, especially since my recovery went really well last time and I know what to expect.
