Avalyn/Avelyn?

Sorry to keep posting! Dh is still stuck on Evelyn- I'm not sold. What're your thoughts on Avalyn/Avelyn (Pronounced Ava Lynn with a long A) We would use Ava as a NN.

Re: Avalyn/Avelyn?

  • IMHO, I would just name her Ava Lynn. I really don't like either of those options.

This. Or stick with Evelyn and call her Eva.

  • I like Avelyn.  Sounds like a perfectly normal and pretty name to me.

  • Avalyn just looks like a smoosh name to me.

  • I dont love it. I prefer Evelyn for sure. It definitely is not my style, but it's not the worst name ever.

  • I just heard this name for the first time last year. Love it. She spells it either Avalyn or Avalynn. I think it is cute for a child but will also age well.
  • Don't like it. I ditto the other suggestions to go with Ava, Eva, or Evelyn rather than use a smoosh name.
  • It sounds like a smush name to me.  I like PPs suggestions of Avaleen or Ava Lynn.

  • I can think of at least three possible ways to pronounce Avelyn.  (Yeah, it should be obvious, but people are weird.)  And Avalyn just looks double-trendy to me, taking the popular name Ava and smooshing it with the -lyn suffix.  I don't see what's wrong with Evelyn.

  • I don't like the spelling of either Avalynn or Avelynn.  Everyone will always assume you mean Evelyn.   Name her Evelyn or if you plan to call her Ava anyway then just name her Ava, with Lynn as the mn.

  • I agree the smoosh looks rough. I would go with Evelyn. Avalyn or whichever spelling isn't the same as the legitimate Evelyn. If you like the sound of Ava and Lynn together then do a double first name, Ava Lynn. Works for my DD :)

  • A girl I went to high school with has a daughter named Aaralyn, it's kind of similar, I also know a 3yr old named Irelyn which I think is really cute.
  • This looks super trendy to me.  I have a friend with a baby girl Avilyn pronounced with the short A sound like apple.  You will probably get a lot of mispronunciation and misspelling of the name.  I agree with PPs- go with Ava or Evelyn/Eva.
  • Thanks for the replies. It's not Ava that I like, I was hoping to find a name Dh and I can agree on! He likes the short n sweet names while I tend to like the longer "old lady" names.

My top choices are: Coraline (Cora), Gwendolyn (Gwen), Genevieve (Evie), and Matilda (Tillie)

Dh loves Evelyn, but I just can't get on board due to popularity and minor family drama. Plus, Ds would've been Evelyn had he been a girl, so the name is associated with that pregnancy... Even though it's obviously not popular here, I still really like Avelyn!
