Does this sound crazy? Am I just making things up?

My little guy has totally been trying to imitate our speech lately!!  He tries to say "hi there" mostly (he's actually pretty close to that one!), he tried to say "rectangle" today, and he totally said "wa-wa"!!!!

He says "dada" a lot, and sometimes "mama".  He babbles it a lot, but then sometimes you can get him to say those ones.

Anybody else's little one doing that?  Or am I just totally nuts?  Lol!

It's so exciting!!  Either way!

  • Emily imitates our speech alot I swear I have heard her say "yeah" "milo (our dog)", and "hi"

She says mama and dada towards us all the time....those are the only words I hear her say in the right context.

  • I don't think you're nuts at all.  I think at this stage they are very curious and will/do immitate us!  That's why a lot of things you'll read say...Don't Stop Talking to them.  They are very curious about things and language skills are key and they learn it from us.  Ian said, the other day when we were in the car, Mama....Bye Bye.  It was almost a sentence, but Mama then a little bit of a pause then Bye Bye.  Melted my heart!

  • Lol well that's good to know!  This baby has totally been "talking"!!!  Glad to know he's not the only one!!

Yeah, he has totally gotten excited and squealed "dada" when he sees my husband before.  That's about the only one he uses in context too!

  • I would swear that DS said "yum" during dinner last night!  He babbles a lot, and will make a "ccc" sound when we say cat.  He's repeated Mama once, but now he just laughs or blows raspberries at me when I try to get him to say it.

    That's cute :)

DS threw his bottle when he was done with it the other day and said, "ah duh" like "all done". DH and I freaked and tried to get him to say it again...I think it was a fluke.

  • DS isn't great with imitating specific letters in words but he constantly mimics the tone or inflection in our voice. I will "scream" and he screams back at the same pitch and length of time. He also mimics my cat's meows, and when I say "Hi there!" he will make babble noises back to the same tone as what I said.

It is SO adorable to have little conversations with them :)

  • DD does that sometimes too! She says 'yeah' a lot. I've heard a 'woah' too. BIL got her to mimic a whole bunch of different sounds one day. She says dada and momma too.

  • Lucia is very into talking, especially now that she's figured out babbling with her dadadada, blah, blah, blah, blah. Her new thing is to watch us very closely while we talk, and then open and close her mouth repeatedly, trying to mimic us. She isn't adding sound to it, she's just trying to see how her mouth works. It's super cute, especially when she does it with Grandpa at the dinner table. She is mesmerized by everything he says!

  • Rowan got Da-da (correctly applied to DH) about.. three weeks ago? She also says "Nom nom" when she's hungry since that's what we say to her to get her to open her mouth for food. DH swears that sometimes when I leave a room their in she'll say Ma-ma and reach towards where I went, but I haven't heard it yet.

Otherwise, she's been babbling like crazypants forever. Our favorite was right after she started, she got a cold. So we were stuck in the bathroom running a hot shower at 3 a.m. to help loosen up her sinusses and she just kept babbling in this hyper whiny voice. "Bleeeah blah blah. Meeeehhh bleah bleah." You could totally translate it! "I don't like this. I feel icky. This sucks!" Instead of babbling, she was b*tching!

She is now repeating sounds, though not recognizable words other than the ones mentioned above.
