Babies: 0 - 3 Months

tummy sleeper

My LO is just over 2 weeks. He has been experiencing really bad reflux/gas.
When we put him in his bassinette he is so unhappy and will just lay there struggling to get his gas out for about 20 minutes, then just cries.

I have been sleeping with him on his tummy on my chest and it seems to work wonders. He will sleep a full 3-4 hours like this and he seems to not have any issues.
Has anybody else had to do this or experienced this?
We have tried giving him gripe water and ovol. The ovol seems to help a little bit but nothing fully works. Dr says it is just a stage he is going through.

I am just worried he will become used to sleeping on my chest and we will have a harder time getting him to sleep on his own.

Any suggestions?

Re: tummy sleeper

  • My LO is 10 weeks and has slept on his tummy since two weeks also.  He wouldn't sleep for more than 10 minutes on his back.  About half of the time he sleeps on my chest and the other half in his crib.  We got a Halo by Snuza, which is a monitor that vibrates and sets off an alarm if breathing stops for more than 20 seconds.  It gives me a little piece of mind.  I'm now wondering if my LO is also suffering from reflux.....

  • Have you tried having him sleep in an elevated position rather than the bassinet?  Like a rock n play or a swing or elevate the mattress in the bassinet?  That sometimes helps with reflux and gas issues.

My LO sleeps on his belly but we didn't start letting him do that until he was about 10 weeks old.  Until then he was sleeping in a rock n play which is at an incline.

  • What are you doing for the reflux?  I would address that first and then he'll be able to sleep on his back.

  • My LO is almost 8 wks old and has been sleeping on his tummy for the last 2 wks.  He holds his head just fine and will turn it from side to side while asleep on his tummy so I don't worry so much.  Now if I lay him on his back his will only sleep 5-10 mins max before waking.  He had terrible gas before and wouldn't sleep well my pedi. didn't seem to understand that he was in pain and he slept a lot on my chest and stomach also before that. He just sleeps better like that.  i was told by a friend that you could put a heating blanket down on low (warm the bed then remove it) and lay the baby on the warmth to help.  I didn't try it but it doesn't sound like a bad idea to try.  I can see how it would similate the heat that he is receiving laying on you.  hope that helps.  Good Luck mama!

  • You may want to check out a special baby monitor called angel care.

Our baby also is a tummy sleeper and I only feel comfortable doing it because we have the angel care motion sensor monitor.

  • My DS always napped on his tummy - and he napped for hours. I had a video monitor and always checked on him. At night he would only sleep on his back - swaddled.
