A good friend of mine just named her son Rhys. It is welsh and pronounced Reese.

I'm not a huge fan. Just curious what you all thought.

Wow I absolutely wouldn't have thought it'd be pronounced like that. I immediately thought it would be similar to the word rise... and I kind of liked it actually. But I don't like it pronounced reese, I don't even see how that would be possible but to each their own lol

Eh I guess thinking about it I do see how it would be pronounced reese, I still feel like it will be mispronounced all his life though.

A absolutely love it. Great Welsh boy name. Good for your friend for using the traditional spelling (big thumbs up to her)! Rhys is generally well liked on this board.
The traditional spelling is becoming much more common in the US now.
I do not like Reese/Reece, though.

Though I'm not a big fan of the name (basically b/c Reese/Reece seems over used recently) I agree I love that they used the traditional spelling. I think it adds some "character" to it. And I think it makes it more masculine than the US spelling.

I thought it was pronounced RISE when she first texted me his name and I really liked it.

I guess I just think the name is over used.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I don't like the name and especially do not like that spelling.

It's DS' name and I adore it! It fits him perfectly! I think it's great that your friend used the traditional spelling!

I much prefer Rhys to Reece and I think it's more masculine looking. Always a fan of traditional spellings.

Not a fan at all. I've seen it on here before and knew it was pronounced like "Reese." I think because its not a traditional name here, people are always going to butcher saying it!

I prefer this spelling over Reese, but not a fan of either. Even though I know it's pronounced like Reese, I keep wanting to pronounce it "Rice" and have to remind myself that this pronunciation is incorrect.
