Fever after prevnar and dtap

Okay, I am a little freaked out because this is a first for me, so if you don't want to read something you may find irrational, just turn around now.

Kellen got his prevnar (pneumococcal) and dtap shots yesterday.  He has already had a dtap with no reaction so I am thinking this is due to the prevnar.  Logan never had the prevnar and never had a fever after a vaccine.

So, I woke up at 4am this morning and he was burning up, shaking and his heart was racing.  I took his temp and it was a little over 102.  I called the doc and he basically just said sounds normal, give him tylenol, blah blah.

Well he has been really sad all day.  I know a fever can make you feel yucky but he was smiling and laughing with a double ear infection.  I am so worried.  Do any of your LO's get a fever after and are they fine a few days later?

Also, (sooner if you are reading this please respond)  why do they get a fever sometimes after vaccines?  It is freaking me out, like his body is rejecting it  Sad  I just feel bad for my munchkin.

Re: Fever after prevnar and dtap

  • Eli has never gotten that bad, but my pedi warns me before every set of shots that he could get a fever and be out of sorts for a few days. The worst was his 3 month shots. He was up to 101 and even though the fever broke after a day or so, he was still wonky for a few days. I'd stick with the Tylenol for another day and if it doesn't get any better, I'd call again. I hope he gets over it soon!

  • A fever is the bodies immune response. The immune system is recognizing the organisms introduced as s something foreign and the fever helps fight off anything foreign.A rise in temp stimulates the body to produce more white blood cells which are the infection fighters. The immune system will remember these organisms and that's how the immunity is built up.

  • Hayley had a small fever for 2 days with no behavior changes with her 1st round of shots. I caved and gave tylenol. Ever since - with every new set - she's been fine. She was awfully tired though - so that was a change in behavior for her. It's just his body's way of workin it through the system probably.

Thank you for the explaination.  That makes me feel better!

And thank you to the others who responded.  It's good to know the "fever after shots" thing isn't a myth.

  • Ditto what Karleegirl said.

A fever after immunizations is actually a GOOD thing.  The fever means that your son's body has reacted to the immunizing antigens in the vaccine, and that his body will likely react quickly and effectively against a real virus/bacteria attack.

It sucks when LOs have fever because you know they are miserable.  But definitely give him a dose of tylenol if he needs it before bed--it will make him sufficiently comfortable until he shakes it off.

Hang in there--remember that you are absolutely doing the best thing in the world for your kiddo by equipping him with incredible protection against potentially-devastating illness.  Just keep an eye on it!
