Cloth Diapering

cloth diaper newbie

Hi, everyone! I was just wondering if anyone has done both disposable and cloth diapers? We did disposable for our first and now we are pregnant with our second, and I was looking into trying clothies.

Is there special detergents that needs to be used? I heard that cost was pretty much the same as disposables just better environmentally.

What's everyone's thoughts or advice on them that could be sent my way!

 thanks!

Re: cloth diaper newbie

  • I use regular Tide to wash my diapers. I use it on all our laundry. You want to avoid fabric softeners and 'free and clear' detergents. Others will have more info on this, I didn't look into it much because I use Tide anyways

It is much less expensive to cloth diaper. I'll go find a link...

I can't find the link I wanted to show you. Disposable diapers will cost around 2500 for each kid. My stash of cloth diapers is around 500. I won't need to buy anything to diaper the rest of my kids.

Is there special detergents that needs to be used? Yes, you need to use a cloth diaper safe detergent.  Some people have luck w/ ultra tide (1/4 regular amount).  DD was allergic. We use Tiny Bubbles and love it.

Whoever told you this is wrong.  Or they have a VERY expensive stash.  My stash is on the upper end at $800 and that's still 1/3 of the cost of disposables. Plus I can sell them or use them for another baby.  You can cloth diaper from $300-$500 easily. Disposables cost about $1800 birth to potty.

What's everyone's thoughts or advice on them that could be sent my way!

Read the FAQ and watch the youtube 7 pt series Cloth Diapering 101

     thanks!

  • thanks I was really looking forward to trying clothies until someone crushed my dream and said it would cost the same amount boo hoo to them. the only part that really sucks on the cloth diaper route is hubby already said he won't be changing diapers :(

I'm glad to hear it is still cheaper like I had originally thought :)

DH wasn't so keen on the idea at first... now he wants to start a cloth diaper awareness program because he  said he really had no idea how great they are and that he thinks a lot of people are misinformed like  he was.

There is no difference in changing a disposable or an All-in-one or prestuffed pocket.

Except for the fact that the disposables smell worse because of the chemicals in them interacting w/ pee.  That STINKS.

My husband always said he wouldn't change diapers but he does. I stay at home so naturally, I change most of the diapers. He puts the pee diapers in the pail and puts the poopy diapers in DD's bathroom because I prefer to rinse poopy diapers before washing. I do all the laundry anyways.
This set up works perfectly for us. You will find a routine that works for your family.

ftm and haven't tried the whole cd thing yet,but regarding your hubby. For my DH he just happened (really) to be sitting with me when some one who does cd was doing a little show n tell for me after I started asking her some questions. Funny thing was DH leaned in and really started to get interested part way through and was sold by the time we were done talking!  So i suggest finding some one who does and have him hear their thoughts on it too. After that I started watching YouTube clips in bed while he was there (more for me than him) and he's in complete support of this now. Good luck!

This!  MH was ambilvalent about CD, but said it was fine if it was what I wanted to do.  Now he loves them so much he shows them off to anyone who comes over.  They are no harder than changing a sposie, and they leak less so it's less messy.
