pregnant and breastfeeding

i am currently just 4 weeks along, but it hurt yesterday when my son was nursing.  hasn't hurt since.  isn't this early for pain?

also, is there no link between preterm labor and breastfeeding?  my son's bf'ing has ramped up a bit and I worry about nursing too often.

Re: pregnant and breastfeeding

  • Can't comment on early pain as I only had it from 812w but as for causing contractions, not really. It's ok for nursing to cause BH contractions but it won't or shouldn't cause real contractions until your oxitocin receptors kick in which won't be until you're near term. I had to limit DD starting at 35w bc it was causing real contractions and I ended up in L and D but wanted to get to 37w at least. I ended up delivering at 38w and am now tandem nursing.

  • I didn't have any pain until about 10 or 11 weeks so yeah, 4 weeks seems early a lot of women wouldn't even realize they were pregnant yet at 4 weeks.
Not a medical professional so this is anecdotal and not medical advice! I did not have any issue with preterm labor or even BH. DS1 nursed the whole pregnancy. DS 2 was born at 38w3d.

  • I am 5 weeks pregnant, and have been having pain for a few days now. Its different with every pregnancy.
  • quick update from original post, he actually bit me and that is why it was painful so no pregnancy pain yet!
  • I didn't have any pain at all while BFing my son through the last pregnancy.  Just a bit of sensitivity.  Had no complications with nursing him throughout the entire pregnancy and had a healthy 10 pound girl at 41 weeks 2 days.
