Nervous about airplane ride

DH and I live in Florida and our whole family lives in Michigan so for Thanksgiving we decided to cash in our reward points and go back to Michigan. Our families could not be happier to see us (mostly they want to see LO) but I am really nervous to fly with DD.  She is a really good baby but can get fussy if she is tired/board. The doctor said to give her a bottle on the way up and down to help with the pressure in her ears . Do you guys have any advice on traveling with LO on an airplane?

Re: Nervous about airplane ride

  • Feed her as you go up and come down, that will help her ears.  Also have a paci ready if she takes one, that should help too. I found that I had all sorts of toys ready to play as well as some music my LO likes on my phone. He tends to sleep in a moving vehicle so I just brought his favorite familiar blanket and that did the trick.

  • My LO has been on 10 different airplanes and is getting ready to embark on her 11th this Thursday.

She's been mostly good. I guess if I had any advice it would be the following: If you bottle feed, premeasure your formula. TSA allows you to bring in water for your baby's formula or ice packs, etc to keep breast milk cool. Keep food readily available.
Pack a few toys for entertainment. Pack lots of diapers and wipes. I would advise to gate check your infant seat. If any extra seats are available, the airlines may allow your infant to use the seat.

Make sure to reserve an aisle seat. Our infants get bored a lot easier than a couple minutes ago. Walking LO, even if it's just to the restrooms, may help ease the boredom temporarily.

Planes often times get quite cool. Make sure to pack warmer clothes. Pack a few extras.

Check with your airline about what they will check at no additional charge for babies; they seem to very.

    Enjoy your trip!

  • DD has been on several flights. I was so nervous each time, but it went pretty smoothly. I just fed her at take off and landing and she pretty much sleeps the rest of the time. The white noise from the engines and the movements make her sleepy. All but one of our flights were in the morning. The one early evening flight we had was not so good. She was over tired and couldn't go to sleep so she fussed a bit. Things that helped us were holding her in the Ergo, bringing some toys, and nursing her when she got fussy. You'll do great!

If you're flying into/out of DTW, good luck with the TSA agents. I flew out of there 4 times when I was pregnant and they always gave me a really hard time when I asked to opt out of the full body scan. Hopefully they aren't as rude about formula or breastmilk!

If you end up taking a car seat on the plane it has to be by the window.

    I never said otherwise.

  • Thank you for all of the great advice.  I will definitely be bringing toys, bottles, and music. DD is a great car sleeper, so I have some hope of her sleeping through it :)

No need to be so defensive. You stated that she should reserve an aisle seat but also mentioned that if there was room on the plane they may let her bring her car seat on. I just wanted to let the OP know that if she brought on a car seat it has to be by the window.
