I had thought about them for my almost 5 and 3 year old, but they play with my ipad. I think they will find the leap pad a little babyish, plus I have heard that the games and apps are very expensive. I am investing in kindle fires for them this christmas. They will last a lot longer than the leap pads will and you can get inexpensive and/or free apps
Basil isn't 4 until next summer, but were looking at getting her a tablet for Christmas this year. We bought the leappad 2, Vtech Innotab 2, and the Innotab 2s to check them all out (and will be returning all but one of them) and by far the innotab2s won. Mostly because you can put a regular memory card into it to add to the 2gig storage. Basil is a super music lover, so we want to be able to put all "her songs" on it so she can listen to them, and that many Mp3s would take up 2 gigs super fast. The leappad has 4 gigs, so a little more than the innotab, but 4 is still not a whole lot. Otherwise, they both seem to function in similar ways. Though all the leappad apps cost money and the innotab has some free ones.

To others out there, please be careful. We purchased LeapPads for the boys in August not knowing that 2 was coming out. Since they were opened (but not used), we couldn't return them. This was at Toys R Us.
To the original poster, my kids LOVE their LeapPads. I don't think things are that expensive. I have found free app codes and once you get an app you can share it on 2 or 3 machines so I only have to get them once for my twins. I understand that people think that Kindles and Tablets will last a lot longer, but I think the boys will use their LeapPads for 4 or so years and by then, with technology changing so much, there will be newer and better things to get.

This is sort of what we did. I had an iPad and considered a leap pad for Callum. Instead we got a Kindle Fire for DH - Callum uses both that and the iPad. There are so many free or very cheap iPad/Kindle apps it just didn't make sense to us.

Oh! That is awful that you couldn't return them for the newer ones! I
went to Target originally to check them out but they don't have ones out
that you can try out anymore, and they said if I bought them and opened
them I couldn't bring them back. I then went to Toys r us, and they
didn't have them out for trying either, but they just recently changed
their policy and allow them to be returned within 30 days even if they
are opened and turned on as long as they do not show any damage or wear.
I returned them today, so I know that is true. But do be careful with
other places, most wont let you return them. BUT I didn't ask if the
change in return policy was nation wide, or just in my store. So make
sure to ask first.
