Weaning Question

I EP and am in the process of weaning. I am trying to drop the length of my pumping sessions, I am using cabbage leaves and taking Sudafed.  I get clogged ducts like they are going out of style (i.e. I will get one if DS simply lays on my chest).

In any event, I guess my question is, what should your breasts feel like when weaning?  Should they be totally soft?  I am still trying to clear up a clogged duct on my right side and that side is also on the hard side.  I can smoosh it around but it is not necessarily soft.  Does this come with the weaning territory or am I doing something wrong?  TIA :)

It took over four years to be diagnosed with PCOS. We TTC #1 for 18 months, did 5 rounds of Clomid and finally moved onto IVF...which worked! Throughout our IF journey, we suffered 3 miscarriages. We conceived both DD and DS without treatment.

Re: Weaning Question

  • Great question.  I'm not weaning just yet but will be in 2 more months.  I have so many questions about weaning and am nervous because I too get clogged milk ducts constantly.  I've tried everything to prevent them but I still get them.  I'm so worried about when it comes time to wean because I know I will get massive ones.  I don't mean to be negative but I just know it will happen.  I'm so confused on how to wean when you get clogged milk ducts.  The whole point of weaning is to lessen the amount you breastfeed yet if you get a clogged milk duct, you have to nurse or pump like crazy.  Good luck!!!

  • Exactly!  I hate that you are getting clogged ducts too but I am glad I am not alone.  They stink!  I clear one and get another one and they seem to get worse and worse and WAY more painful as time goes on.  It is like I fix one breast and then the other one begins to hurt.  It just sucks!

  • I am weaning as well, and this seems to be working for me.  I EP for 3 weeks and I did a gradual wean.  So I was pumping every 3 hours then droped it to 4 hours then 4 times a day then 2 times a day then once then nothing.  I haven't gotten 1 clogged duct since.  I had masitis in both boobs for 2 weeks and it was brutal so that is why I did the gradual wean.  I haven't done anything else and I haven't leaked at all in over a day.  They are a tad sore still but very soft and I can tell they are smaller.
  • Yep I hear you.  Glad to hear I'm not alone either.  Usually they are small ones but I have gotten several really bad ones that are so painful and take like 2 days to get rid of.  My left breast gets them the worst and when they are the bad one's, the entire top portion of my breast is flat and hard.  I don't know if you heard, but I started taking the herbal supplement Lecithin per the LC suggestion and it seemed to lessen them a bit.  Since you're weaning though you may not need it.  It's supposed to thin out your milk a bit so it doesn't clog.  Also increasing your vitamin c.  I've tried it all.  Good luck again!!!
