Cloth Diapering

? About cloth wipes

We are a little late to hop on the cloth wipe wagon but a friend makes them and I am going to try them out. My question is should I put them in a wipe container with solution or use a spray bottle? I am a little worried about bacteria in the container. Also, does anyone have a good recipe for wipe solution?

Re: ? About cloth wipes

  • I just have some water with a squirt or two of CA Baby wash in a peri bottle.  I store my wipes dry in a basket and wet as needed.  Super easy.

We did the same except in the spray bottle we had water with grapefruit seed extract and tea tree oil.

  • I store my already prepped wipes in a wipes warmer.  The oils in a wipes solution are anti-fungal and will help prevent bacteria growth and other molds.  I use CJs Carcass cleanser as my wipes solution.  I have some tea tree oil that I use for backup when I run out of the CJs.

  • I use premoistened wipes in a plastic container. I have used a solution in the past but DD developped rashes, so now it's just water with a couple drops of GFSE if I remember.

  • I keep my wipes dry and use the Bum Genius Bottom Cleaner spray. Once the solution is out, I plan on just filling it with water and using that.

    Ditto this exactly for me

this, but I also add a little olive oil, makes the wipes a little smoother on her bum.

  • I was going to just use water in a spray bottle, but my sister (who has two kids) sold me on the idea of the warmer. I remember her getting the warmer for her shower, actually, and saying that it seemed silly, but she's a convert who swears that warm wipes made the kids less fussy during changes, especially during the winter.

I worried about wipes dampened with just water molding or growing other things, so I've been looking into different homemade wipes solutions. A lot of people use a little baby soap, baby oil, tea tree oil, and water, but my childbirth educator said that baby oil is a petroleum-based product and isn't really good to use. A little more searching turned up coconut oil and grapeseed oil as alternatives, and it turns out that coconut oil has antimicrobial properties, so that's what I'm going with. Here's what I plan to do:

    1 tbs baby shampoo/wash (optional)
    1 tbs coconut oil
    2 cups of boiled water
2-4 drops tea tree oil, lavender essential oil, or grapefruit seed extract (optional)

Boiling the water will help make sure you're starting off with a solution free of bacteria, etc. I've heard that can really help. (Some people use distilled water, but I'm lazy and don't want to have to go buy water for my wipes solution.)

In case you're curious, I'm going with the Prince Lionheart Warmies Wipes Warmer
